“Capture Your Culture” Photo Contest Winner Announced

Culture Days Winning Entry from Sidney, B.C.

 

 

Sidney, B.C. resident Bob Orchard has won this year’s province-wide “Capture Your Culture” photo contest. Orchard was chosen from 68 entries by votes cast all across the province. Orchard’s prize was a $500 gift card to Etsy.com.

The contest was part of the lead-up to the Culture Days, held September 25 through 27. During the sixth annual Culture Days weekend, more than 600 free, interactive activities took place in 50 communities across BC, joining thousands of similar activities across Canada that invited people to get involved with local arts and artists in their communities to share their love of culture.

To tie in with the weekend, the Black Press “Capture Your Culture” contest invited the public to enter photos representing their favourite arts or cultural activities.

Orchard’s winning photo, “Chinese Dancer” was taken of 11-year-old Bonnie Lu, a dancer from Ocean Rain Arts Academy, performing in Victoria’s Centennial Square. “I take photos as a hobby and I love different cultures and taking photos of dancers in their native costumes,” said Orchard. “Great thanks to Bob for capturing this wonderful moment of dancing joy for Bonnie,” said Lu’s mother, Liaoxin Xu.

“Culture Days is a wonderful opportunity for the public to go behind the scenes and discover their own creativity through activities hosted by the local arts and cultural community,” said Judy Robertson, Outreach Coordinator at Metro Vancouver and chair of the BC Culture Days Task Force in announcing the winners. “Congratulations to our winners and big thank you to everyone who entered photos for the 2015 Black Press “Capture Your Culture” photo contest.
