Wine Recommendation – Soupe aux Moules

Wine Recommendation – #TasteofThursday Soupe aux Moules de Mamie Suzanne

When I was asked to provide a wine recommendation for this recipe, my mouth watered and the first thing I wanted to do was to go out and buy the ingredients to make it. Fortunately, it was too late to shop and so first things first, THEN I’ll make the soup.

I am a seafood lover and mussels are right up there in my books, whether it be moules and frites (you’ve got to try them in Honfleur, France – a small village on the Normandy coast), or in a soup or seafood stew.

The best mussels will always be served somewhere close to the ocean. They cry out for a clean, crisp refreshing white wine and Muscadet is a classic match. Other white choices include Chablis, Verdiccio , white Bordeaux (Sauvignon Blanc/Semillon) or Sancerre (Sauvignon Blanc). Pinot Blanc or Pinot Gris would also work.

Another excellent choice would be a dry rosé from France or BC.

However, if you believe that the best mussels come from the tiny village of Bouzigues in Languedoc (south of France), then you might even want to try a red wine, as they do there. Corbieres (Carignan), Faugeres (a blend of Carignan, Cinsault, Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah) or St. Chinian (a blend of Carignan, Cinsault, Grenache, Lledoner Pelut, Mourvèdre and Syrah.) These are rustic wines with earthy, spicy flavours that do justice served with a bowl of mussels.

Finally, if you are feeling daring and adventurous, search out a nice Madeira. Lovely.

Now it is time to make that grocery list before I head out to my local fish market and green grocer.
