Rumble Theatre presents TREMORS

August 11 – 20, 2016 at Il Centro Italian Cultural Centre

Rumble Theatre is thrilled to present the 2016 edition of Tremors, our festival of emerging talent. We’ve selected three outstanding scripts (Dry Land by Ruby Rae Spiegel, Bull by Mike Bartlett, and Better Angels: A Parable by Andrea Scott) and assembled a company of emerging artists to direct, design and perform each show. For two weeks, these three plays will be performed simultaneously in different rooms of the Italian Cultural Centre. It’s like a Cineplex of theatre…with a bar! Tremors runs August 11-20, 2016, with matinees on August 14 & 17.

“Every second year is a Tremors year at Rumble,” says Rumble Theatre Artistic Director Stephen Drover. “And with each Tremors we find ourselves inspired by the tidal wave of talent coming from our community of emerging artists. This year is certainly no exception. We are privileged to produce this event and delighted to share with our audiences the work of some truly remarkable young artists.”

THE TREMORS 2016 PLAYS

Dry Land by Ruby Rae Spiegel

Ester is a swimmer trying to stay afloat. Amy is curled up on the locker room floor. Dry Land dives into the lives of two teen girls and explores what happens in one high school locker room after everybody’s left. Spiegel’s play, her first full-length work, was a finalist for the prestigious Susan Smith Blackburn Prize in 2015.

Better Angels: A Parable by Andrea Scott

Akosua moves from Ghana to Canada for a better life and finds a special kind of hell tailored just for her. Think slavery is over? Think again, as liars get caught in their own webs. Winner of the 2015 SummerWorks Prize for Production.

Bull by Mike Bartlett

Audiences get ringside seats as three coworkers fight to keep their jobs. Brutal and hard-hitting, Bull is an unflinching look at a toxic corporate culture from which no one escapes unscathed. Mike Bartlett is the Olivier Award-winning playwright of Cock, which Rumble produced in our 2015/16 season.

ABOUT TREMORS

In 2007, Rumble created the Tremors Festival, originally a two-week run of plays created by emerging companies. In 2014 we devised a new model for Tremors that focussed on providing mentorship to individual emerging artists rather than emerging companies. Tremors is now a vehicle for emerging artists to build networks, receive professional mentorship, develop their craft and work on exciting plays. Each show will be directed, designed and performed by a company of emerging artists working with the guidance of professional mentors. Rumble provides discipline-specific mentorship from professional theatre practitioners to all participants. This year’s professional mentors include Lois Anderson, Sarah Rodgers, and Jovanni Sy.

Rumble thanks The Georgia Straight, our media sponsor, for its generous support of our company and of Tremors.
