From ballet and contemporary to flamenco and swing, the annual Scotiabank Dance Centre Open House is an opportunity to sample a host of exciting dance styles in a day of open classes, studio showings and events. Participating companies and artists include Kababayang Pilipino, Karen Flamenco, Shot of Scotch, Polymer Dance, Vanessa Goodman/Action at a Distance, Anderson Performance Clinic, and many more.

Schedule of Events

Pre-registration is not required.

Classes are suitable for all levels, including beginner, except where specified.

11am-12 noon Class: Pow Wow with Nyla Carpentier of Raven Spirit Dance. An introduction to the history and culture of Pow Wow, covering the basic steps of different styles.

11am-12 noon Workshop: Contemporary dance artist Justine A. Chambers shares some of the practices developed through the creation process for her new project Semi-precious. Intermediate to advanced level dance experience required.

11am-12 noon Talk: Stuart Anderson of Anderson Performance Clinic and an osteopath from his team leads an information session on osteopathy.

12 noon-1pm Studio Showing: Work generated by contemporary dance artists Kelly McInnes, Ileanna Cheladyn and Hana Rutka during a training intensive directed by Artist-in-Residence Helen Walkley.

12 noon-1pm Class: Nia with Jasjit Rai. Nia is a body and soul practice blending dance and healing arts with dynamic energizing moves, exploring the joy of movement through conscious choice.

12 noon-1pm Class: Ballet with Linda Arkelian. High energy and inspiring class offers the chance to develop technique and discover new ways to move.

1-2pm Class: Contemporary dance with Polymer Dance, including a technique and ensemble improvisation.

1-2pm: Class: Highland dance with Shot of Scotch.

1-2pm Class: Caribbean Dance Fitness with Nao – a mix of Latin, Caribbean and folkloric movements.

2-3pm Performance: Kababayang Pilipino is BC’s leading Filipino performance ensemble, promoting Filipino folk heritage through authentic dance, music, song and drama. This special presentation highlights the rich diversity and culture of the Philippines with a program of exciting and beautiful dances.

2-3pm Class: Swing with Philippe Bigotte/Dancing Bee Dance Studio. Includes the basic swing step, Lindy Charleston, and some couple moves. Partner not required.

2-3pm Talk: Mental Performance Coaching with Stuart Anderson, Anderson Performance Clinic. An introduction to the principles of performance psychology, including dealing with performance anxiety, and visualization techniques.

3-4pm Class: Hip hop with Kim Sato, Artistic Director of Project Soul.

3-4pm Studio Showing: Daina Ashbee shares new work developed during the Yulanda M Faris Choreographers Program. Featuring dancer Lorena Ceraso, and followed by a Q&A session.

3-4pm Class: Middle Eastern belly dance with Maki Dance.

4-5pm Class: Flamenco with Karen Flamenco.

4-5pm Studio Showing: Vanessa Goodman/Action at a Distance shares work and processes she has been developing during the Yulanda M Faris Choreographers Program.

Throughout the day:

11am-4pm Vancouver Ballet Society library/Dance International Magazine open to visitors.

11am-5pm The Dance Current: Join writers/editors from The Dance Current magazine at the pop-up dance writing lab. Participants can choose a prompt and try their hand at some micro-dance-writing, chat about the future of dance criticism in the media, and celebrate the 20th anniversary of Canada’s dance magazine.

 

One of Canada’s leading dance facilities, Scotiabank Dance Centre opened in September 2001 and has become a hub for dance activity, housing rehearsals, performances, classes and events all year round. “Our annual Open House is an opportunity to celebrate a wonderful building, which has become a home for dance of all kinds, and also to experience the excitement and diversity of Vancouver’s dance scene,” said Mirna Zagar, Executive Director of The Dance Centre, the organization which spearheaded the development of the building.
