Summertime is Rosé time, but if you’re like me, anytime is Rosé time. Rosé is one of the most versatile wines out there – bright, juicy, food-friendly and endlessly diverse. It can be made from nearly any red grape, in styles ranging from crisp and bone-dry to lush and fruit-driven. Fortunately, most people have finally realized that most Rosé wines are not sweet. Now, it’s not a case of “Do you like Rosé?” but rather, “What kind of Rosé do you like best?”
So, it’s no wonder I was excited to attend Haywire’s second annual Rosé Rodeo, held at their stunning Garnet Valley Ranch. Guests were encouraged to lean into the western theme, and many showed up in cowboy boots and hats, while a few neighbourhood horses made an appearance to complete the scene.
From the moment we arrived, the hospitality was warm and generous. Attendees were welcomed with a choice of three Free Form wines–2019 Cabernet Franc Rosé, 2020 Pinot Noir Rosé, and 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon–before being handed a blue ticket for dinner at the Summerland Smoke Shack food truck.

Food options included:
* Slow Smoked Beef Brisket
* Slow Smoked Pork Shoulder
* Veggie Burger
* Cheese Board
* Meat Board
I struggled to choose but eventually opted for the brisket sandwich and a side of chicken chorizo chowder. Both were fantastic. The chowder was a symphony of flavour–rich, smoky, and hearty–while the brisket was beautifully done. The bun was soft and fresh, the meat tender and perfectly smoked with just the right amount of sauce to complement rather than overwhelm.

As the evening went on, more Haywire wines flowed, pairing beautifully with the food and the festive atmosphere. Local musician Michael Daniels provided the soundtrack, filling the air with familiar classics from Creedence Clearwater, Bruce Springsteen and a mix of soft rock and country favourites. Guests wiled away the evening at undercover tables, glasses in hand, enjoying the music, the company of friends, and the ranch’s peaceful mountain setting.
Despite overcast skies, the rain held off, and the energy of the evening was anything but dampened. By the time the event wound down at 9 pm, it was clear that Haywire’s Rosé Rode had once again hit the sweet spot: a perfect blend of wine, food, music, and community.
If you haven’t visited Garnet Valley Ranch Winery yet, it’s a must. Tucked away at 26405 Garnet Valley Ranch Road in Summerland, it’s breathtaking in every season and well worth the drive. To plan your visit, call 250-460-1650.
