Celebrate Spring with Merveilleux Macarons
Created in 2006 by famed Paris Patissier Pierre Hermé, International Macaron Day on March 20th has been widely embraced by Vancouverites and Vancouver patisseries. This year, L’Epicerie Gourmande in the Granville Island Market is joining the celebration. “You don’t need an excuse to enjoy these little gems,” says owner Chef David Izquierdo. “What could be more enticing than a little jewel-coloured cookie – the crunch of meringue followed by intense flavour.” Chef David should know as he is the ‘real thing’ – a French chef hailing from Provence.
L’Epicerie stocks a wide range of flavours – more than a dozen that rotate through the week – from lavender to strawberry, coconut, raspberry, coffee, chocolate, pistachio and many more. Often, L’Epicerie creates special macarons to celebrate occasions such as their recently very popular blackberry-flavoured ‘Good Luck Macarons’ in honour of Chinese New Year.
On March 20 Macaron Day, L’Epicerie Gourmande will donate 30 percent of regular macaron sales to B.C. Children’s Hospital. The scrumptious two-bite morsels are priced at $2 each and are available singly or in boxes by the dozen for gifting.
March 21 is the official first day of spring. That is the day that L’Epicerie will introduce a specialty macaron in celebration of the season and Easter. From March 21 through April 6, you will also find Easter Chick Macarons available in addition to the regular flavours. Easter Chicks feature a milk chocolate ganache centre and will be priced at $2.60 per piece. Again, they are also available boxed for gifting.
Warning: Macarons have been known to be addictive.
Hop on over to L’Epicerie Gourmande in the Granville Island Market and enjoy a Macaron Spring Fling. You’ll be glad you did.
