WESBROOK VILLAGE FESTIVAL 2018

ANNUAL FESTIVAL RETURNS TO UBC COMMUNITY WITH ACTIVITIES FOR ALL

The bustling boulevards of Wesbrook Village will be alive with family-friendly activities during the community’s annual community festival on Saturday, September 8.

This special event promises fun for all ages: young families, students and adults alike.

Shoppers can enjoy a sidewalk sale where local retailers and artisans will showcase new products with interactive games and contests.

For the young at heart, the Wesbrook Village Festival also features a kids zone, complete with face-painting fun, craft tables, bouncy castles and more.

Don’t miss the performances on the TD Canada Trust Entertainment Stage. We’re bringing in Will’s JamsDr Strangelove Band, various UBC entities, and many more.

TD will also be having their GRAND OPENING during the Festival, so don’t miss out.

And of course, what beats a FREE BARBECUE?

Parking at Wesbrook Village is free and the community is on various bus routes.

Will’s Jams

Will’s Jams is children’s musician Will Stroet! He’s a Juno-nominated singer-songwriter, CBC Kids TV star, educator and dad who creates multilingual music that ignites imagination and motivates movement for the young and young-at-heart. Through witty wordplay and catchy choruses, Will inspires kids to be active, healthy, creative and engaged in the world through educational music.

12:00pm – 12:30pm

The Shiney D Show – Comedy Acrobat

Shiney D is a Circus performer, actor and acrobat who has performed this show at many festivals and events all over the world. This high flying wonder boy will light up the show with daring acrobatics, juggling, feats of awe and a spectacular 10 foot Chinese pole finale!

12:30pm – 1:30pm

Beauty Shop Dolls

Fresh faced and stylishly retro-chique, Beauty Shop Dolls are a vocal harmony group with a charming, colourful take on the classic stylings of The Andrew Sisters, or The Chordettes. The trio is comprised of Amanda Williamson, Nadia von Hahn and Sarah Walters who together have instant chemistry with the perfect blend of fetching sugary vocals and lively choreography. Beauty Shop Dolls leave anyone with a sweet tooth for musical delight well satisfied!

Dr. Strangelove

DR STRANGELOVE has become a Vancouver music and entertainment icon in the past two decades. They have managed to remain on the cutting edge of the city’s live music scene by bouncing effortlessly between styles as distinctly different as The Beatles to Lady Gaga. Their ability to constantly re-invent themselves musically to suit the tastes of the audience of “that ” moment, stems from their deep desire and dedication to always be more than a live jukebox.

Ache Brasil

Aché Brasil represents the culture, the traditions, the beliefs, the music and the movement of the people of Brazil. Equal parts music, dance, and spectacle, Aché Brasil has played to enthusiastic audiences and critical acclaim from all over North America. They received a nomination for “Live Performers of the Year” at the West Coast Music Awards. Through music and dance, this high energy group educates and entertains audiences of all ages about Brazil’s cultural diversity.

UBC Thunderbird Marching Band

The Thunderbird Marching Band is the University of British Columbia’s marching and pep band. The TMB is one of only four university-level marching bands in Canada, and the only one west of Ontario. They have performed at UBC Thunderbirds games, as well as at other various events in the Lower Mainland, including last year’s Wesbrook Village Festival!

Badaboom

Badaboom is a modern quintet playing a mix of traditional jazz standards and interpretations of the great pop music we grew up with. The result is an eclectic mix of jazz, pop, and Latin tunes with our own twist.

12:30pm – 1pm

Ricky Ringmaster (Stilt Walker #1)

NZR Stilt-walkers are back again at this year’s festival, watch for Ricky Ringmaster roaming the Wesbrook Village Festival giving high fives and high hopes wherever he roams!

UBC Music Initiative

The UBC Music Initiative is a student-run volunteer organization dedicated to providing opportunities for students to perform and share their music with the community. Through their concerts at hospitals, senior homes, and on campus, they aim to bring a little joy to those in need with their music. At UMI, students of all faculties with an ongoing passion for music are brought together to rediscover their love for musical performance, share their musical talents, and have fun!

Ava Maria

Ava Maria is an artist from North Vancouver, British Columbia who began writing songs at the age of eleven. In 2016, Ava Maria wrote the song “Finding Hope” for the Handsworth Secondary play revolving around the Syrian refugee crisis. This would soon become her lead single. Following the release of “Finding Hope,” her music caught the ear of Dance Moms star Abby Lee Miller, who helped catapult it to global success by airing it on her Lifetime show. This year, Ava Maria released her debut album “We’ve Got Issues” with remarkable success
