Tuesday, February 17, marks the start of the Chinese Lunar New Year, and this year is extra special! The year of the Fire Horse happens once only every 60 years, symbolizing rapid transformation, fierce independence, and bold action. That spirit will ignite across Metro Vancouver as it celebrates the Lunar New Year with parades, cultural events, and authentic culinary experiences.

Last weekend, I enjoyed a sneak peek of what’s not to be missed this year.
My afternoon started at the Chinatown Storytelling Centre, Canada’s first museum dedicated to the Chinese Canadian journey. Through curated exhibits, seasonal programs, and interactive kiosks, the space brings multi-generational stories to life, highlighting the community’s resilience, cultural richness, and lasting contributions to Canada. On view now, “Vitality: Iconic Images, Hidden Stories” features photos from acclaimed photographer Fred Herzog. The images capture the essence of the Chinatown and Hastings neighbourhoods between the 1950s and 1970s. As part of the Vancouver Chinatown Foundation’s revitalization efforts, the Storytelling Centre serves as both a museum and a vibrant gathering place where history and hope unite.

After exploring the Storytelling Center, I ventured a few doors down into Chinatown BBQ. The retro-inspired restaurant specializes in barbecued meats prepared by traditionally trained Chinese chefs. Highlights of my meal included BBQ duck, the BBQ three-meat platter—roast pork, crispy pork belly, and soy sauce chicken—and classic curry fish balls. Each dish offered a tender balance between savoury flavours and subtle sweetness. The menu also includes their award-winning curries and a selection of side dishes, all at a reasonable price and served in a relaxed atmosphere.

To complement dinner, I enjoyed the 2022 Haywire Lunar Red. Since 2014, the limited-edition wine has been released each year for Lunar New Year celebrations. Crafted to match the bold, layered flavours of Asian cuisine, its smoky spice and ripe fruit profile paired perfectly with the succulent barbecue dishes. In the spirit of the season, a portion of the proceeds from each bottle of Haywire Lunar Red supports the Chinatown Storytelling Centre.
So, if you’re looking for a meaningful way to celebrate the Lunar New Year, grab a few friends and explore Chinatown this year. Support these local businesses and don’t forget to grab a bottle of the Haywire Lunar Red!
