The team at Honey Salt will host a celebration of First Nations heritage, culture and cuisine during the fifth edition of its ongoing Art-Dinner Series on Thursday, October 2 at Parq Casino (39 Smithe Street).

The event begins at 6 p.m. with a Four Hands, four-course collaboration dinner between Honey Salt Chef and Art-Dinner Series founder Johann Caner and Chef Stephanie Baryluk for $95 per person plus tax and gratuity and also features a live art exhibit on the Honey Salt patio, entertainment provided by acclaimed First Nations musicians and artists and art activation and more, All proceeds from the live art auction going to local non-profit Girls Who LEAP

Girls who LEAP (Lead to Empower & Act with Purpose) is a volunteer-run charity that provides leadership and mentorship opportunities as well as wrap-around supports for female-identifying and non-binary youth in the Downtown Eastside and Grandview Woodlands communities of Vancouver.

Chef Baryluk is a proud Teetl’it Gwich’in from Teetl’it Zheh (Fort McPherson) in Treaty 11 Territory who draws inspiration from her Arctic upbringing and the hunting, fishing and land stewardship practices that shaped her connection to food and culture. Named one of Canada’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women in 2024, Baryluk is passionate about preserving and sharing Indigenous culinary traditions through her creations and educational initiatives and combines her culinary expertise with advocacy to inspire future generations and promote cultural heritage and sustainability on a global scale.

“This an important event that allows us to pay homage to First Nations heritage and culture and the contributions that Indigenous peoples have provided since time immemorial,” says Chef Johann Caner. “I’m extremely honoured to join with Chef Baryluk to create an event that will benefit a worthwhile and valuable cause in our community and hopefully inspire others to follow suit.”

During the event, the Honey Salt patio will also play host to an exhibit curated by Fingerprint Art Gallery Owner Jack Topolewski that will showcase artworks by a trio of First Nations artists, actor and professional skateboarder, local cultural icon Joe Buffalo, renowned graffiti and mixed media artist and cultural activist Larissa Healy (also known as Gurl 23) and Eliot White-Hill (Kwulasultun), an artist and storyteller from the Snuneymuxw First Nation in Nanaimo.

The evening will also feature a special guest appearance by Miss Universe Canada 2024 representative Ashley Callingbull, a tireless advocate for Indigenous women and youth who champions Girls Who LEAP. To conclude the evening, Callingbull will contribute to a powerful live performance piece in collaboration Vancouver artist, actor, director and filmmaker David Hovan

Also joining the event and bringing soul, ceremony and storytelling to the fore will be Indigenous Sioux singer and artist YB Nakota, Leq’a:mel First Nation singer-songwriter Patrick Anthony and Edmonton-based artist Lovina Tootoosis, who was raised in Poundmaker Cree Nation in Saskatchewan.
