Science World this May: Expo 86 40th Anniversary Celebrations

Expo 86 40th Anniversary

On May 2nd, Science World marks a milestone four decades in the making: the 40th anniversary of Expo 86. The World Exposition on Transportation and Communication (Expo 86) gave Vancouver one of its most recognizable buildings, Science World.

British Columbia, with Queen Elizabeth II dedicating the building “for the people of British Columbia.” Following a massive $19 million renovation and expansion, Science World opened to the public on May 6, 1989, featuring dozens of hands-on exhibits in five new galleries and the largest OMNIMAX® dome screen in the world.

Forty years ago this spring, 22 million people from around the world came to Vancouver for Expo 86, and the city was forever changed. The geodesic dome built as its centrepiece was never supposed to be permanent. Today, it’s one of the most iconic buildings in Vancouver’s skyline and the home of Science World.

In the 37 years since opening its doors, Science World has served over 18 million people and grown into one of BC’s most beloved institutions. The dome itself, now lit by 651 energy-efficient LED lights, remains one of Vancouver’s most iconic landmarks, its identity forever linked to the World Fair that made it possible.

Originally called the Expo Centre, the geodesic dome was only meant to last for 6 months. After welcoming 22 million visitors from around the world during the World Fair, the Expo Centre stayed. In 1987, three levels of government announced that the Expo Centre would become Science World.

“Expo 86 was a world-class event, and the Expo Centre was at the heart of it all. Exactly 40 years since the building’s opening, it remains one of the city’s iconic landmarks and favourite destinations for British Columbians and visitors alike,” said Tracy Redies, President and CEO of Science World. “Through some incredible feats of ingenuity, our team has transformed the building into a long-lasting cultural institution. It continues to be a space where the wonder seekers and tomorrow’s thinkers can explore science firsthand. We’re proud to honour the legacy of Expo 86 and to carry its spirit of wonder for generations to come.”
