I’m no fashion writer, and I have to confess that I was feeling a little intimidated at the prospect of interviewing award-winning jewellery designer Imogen Belfield for the North American launch of her new Fine Jewellery collection. After all, this is a woman whose sculptural designs have been spotted on celebrities including Ellie Goulding, Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford and Cameron Diaz, and have appeared in VOGUE, Elle and Harper’s Bazaar.
I shouldn’t have worried. I had such a delightful time with this generous, unassuming and talented artist that my half hour appointment lasted more than an hour. Aside from capturing the beauty of her stunning creations, Imogen and I chatted about everything from her beginnings as an artist and sculptor and our love for St. Ives, to the importance of mentorship and her interest in 3D printing.
Imogen had no doubt that she would pursue an artistic career. “I always knew I’d be an artist of some sort,” she said. “I was always musical and creative, and began sculpture after my graduation. Then I transitioned my skills into my jewellery designs.
“I love pushing the boundaries for jewellery, and I love the idea of making pretty things with a function,” Imogen continued. “I love having a product that people can invest in – and keep. There’s a sentimentality attached to jewellery. It doesn’t fade, it doesn’t break, it doesn’t fray.”
It’s obvious that she loves what she does, and she acknowledges that she’s been very fortunate. She credits a long relationship with a PR firm that helped her to develop her brand, and supporters including the British Fashion Council and acclaimed British jewellery designer Stephen Webster.
What’s next? Imogen hopes to design jewellery specifically for feature films, and she also wants to go back to her sculptural roots and create installations for public buildings like hotels. She’s also very keen to incorporate 3D printing into her designs. We even talked about introducing her organic, tactile designs to blind and visually impaired people – an idea she got very enthusiastic about!
But, it’s all about her creations. Here are some photos of the Imogen Belfield Fine Jewellery collection.
And my personal favourite – this gorgeous and unique bracelet!
From Monday, April 18 to Wednesday, April 20, Imogen will also be available for a limited number of private, one-on-one consultations for commissioned pieces in her Fine and Bespoke Collections. Members of the public can reserve an appointment by contacting Imogen Belfield’s exclusive Canadian distributor Wardrobe Apparel at info@nullwdrobeapparel.com.
