The smash-hit showcase of weird gift ideas is bigger and better than before
The runaway success of last year’s holiday shopping season, the Weirdos Holiday Market returns in a new, larger location, December 8 and 9, with more vendors and more incomparable strangeness for everyone’s gift-giving list.
Curated by Rachel Zottenberg, owner of popular local oddities shop This Monkey’s Gone to Heaven, the Weirdos Holiday Market features a wonderfully peculiar mix of artisan products geared to shoppers looking for left-of-centre gifts. 2017’s inaugural edition exceeded the expectations of everyone involved: More than 2,000 shoppers descended upon Betamax Art Studios to peruse one of the most unusual collections of gift ideas ever to be showcased in Vancouver.
In response to this demand, the Weirdos Holiday Market relocates this year to The Hall (1739 Venables St.) with 30 artist merchants on hand, including:
> Bonetique: Yolanda Mason’s delicate and whimsical sculptures, created using salvaged animal bones and found organic matter.
> Kwest Costume Art: Handmade steampunk and fantasy leather creations, including masks and props.
> Sovka Design: Unconventional hand-sewn cloth dolls made entirely with recycled fabric, yarn and buttons.
> Hannah Haines: Strange handmade crochet items, such as zombies, monster ice-cream cones, and cyclops.
> Whisper Jewels: A unique collection of artisan jewellery that includes one-of-a-kind, handmade steel, bronze and copper rings, pendants and earrings.
> Plus more new artists offering quirky, and sometimes macabre, products.
Back by popular demand:
> Dirt Spindle: Unusual but totally usable pottery pieces that have been fused into the shapes of human mouths, nipples, feet and hands.
> Mush Appreciated: Beautiful, educational and strange jewellery with mushrooms as the focus.
> Jaik Puppyteeth: Cynical and hilarious prints and T-shirts from one of Vancouver’s most famous weirdos.
In addition, look for an array of goodies from the shelves of This Monkey’s Gone to Heaven, including mounted butterflies, moths and other insects, edgy gag gifts and holiday greeting cards, human bones, beautiful posters, and more.
Also new this year is the addition of appropriately curious live entertainment, including classic sideshow acts like sword swallowing, bizarre weightlifting, and more unbelievable feats of the human body. Alternately, take a turn in the bouncy castle, or take a seat for a Tarot card reading.
Hungry? The culinary wizards of HandTaste Ferments will be on-site with all manner of inspired deliciousness. Holiday-themed beverages, suitable for all ages, will also be available for purchase.
