ONLINE HUB ‘BREAKING BREAD’ EXPANDS NATIONWIDE IN SUPPORT OF INDEPENDENT CANADIAN FOOD AND BEVERAGE BUSINESSES
Not-for-Profit Initiative Connects Consumers with Small Restaurants, Wineries, Breweries and More
With a mission to support Canada’s small, independent food and beverage businesses, non-profit initiative Breaking Bread is marking its seventh week in operation with the launch of a new, expanded website featuring more than 1,500 listings across Canada.
From restaurants, to wineries and breweries, to grocery delivery and more, the user-friendly online platform gives consumers the inside track on the food and beverage services near them during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond, such as:
- Takeout options;
- Contactless delivery;
- Curbside pickup;
- Meal kits and groceries;
- Freezer meals;
- Wine, beer and other liquor;
- Support for healthcare workers and first responders.
Founded on March 13, 2020 by hospitality communications agency SMC Communications, Breaking Bread was born out of a collective of 23 restaurants in the Greater Vancouver area that came together to urge public support in response to COVID-19. Since then, the website has expanded to more than 1,500 listings nationwide and is growing in new features and businesses by the day.
“Restaurants are part of the indelible fabric of our communities — old favourites, new hotspots and best-kept secrets where we have gathered to celebrate, connect and be among friends,” says Shelley McArthur Everett, Principal of SMC Communications and Founder of Breaking Bread. “That’s why it’s so critical that we all come together and sustain that familiar spirit of hospitality at a time when the industry needs our support the most.”

ABOUT BREAKING BREAD | Launched on March 13, 2020, Breaking Bread is an online hub born out of a need to urge public support of local, independent restaurants and the foodservice and hospitality industry at large as well as those whose livelihoods rely on them during the COVID-19 pandemic. Since its inception, Breaking Bread has grown from a collective of 23 Vancouver restaurants to a roster of more than 1,500 businesses across Canada that use the platform to connect with consumers looking for ways to support local restaurants through contactless delivery, curbside pickup, takeout options, meal kits and groceries and more. At its core, Breaking Bread’s mission is to build community and serve as a reminder that now more than ever, staying connected to one another is every bit as critical as keeping our distance.
