Remember when East Van was East Van? New eating holes weren’t just for the finer things. It was almost like when Granville & Robson was the Underground and nose rings. Or Commercial Drive was 100% Little Italy. Times be a changing. Growth happens and life, culture and business move forward. So, the Uncommon Cafe pushes forward into the change that Covid has forced on us all, with a plan of growth but more geared towards the days of old. A growth plan, with the soul of East Van.
Owners Lisa & Luc Leimanis have embraced the changes thrust on small businesses with open arms. “As my old boss used to say, if you don’t grow you die.” Lisa is fond of saying. “So, we decided to grow!”.
With their 5-year anniversary happening this summer and the recent new brand addition of Uncommon Coffee, they are growing alright. To that they are going for gold with a liquor licence application underway. The team is just gearing up transform their space in anticipation of the new Uncommon Nights. “We noticed most of the spaces in the hood were geared towards fine dining and higher price points. There was a need for somewhere comfortable, casual, down to earth and what we call unpretentious.” Says owner and Chef Luc.
The team wanted their comforting craft food to go along with their slightly eclectic and home feeling cafe. They are already known for their home roasted coffee, amazing sandwiches and warm welcoming attitudes and wanted to make sure that was brought forward through to Uncommon Nights. So, expect gooey pizzas, big burritos, local beers and ciders, wine and bubbly. This will be, and is, a place where everyone knows your name! Now, we sit back and wait,. ……and yes, there will be a meatball pizza,… and something called a sheetza.
