STARWALKER AT THE CULTCH to March 5th

It’s been a few years since I attended a production in a theatre and I was excited to have to opportunity to see “Starwalker”, a new musical written and directed by Corey Payette at The Cultch – York Theatre.

“Starwalker” is a deeply-moving story of love, loss and self-discovery beautifully realized within the fabulous world of drag. We follow Star, an indigenous youth, along his journey as he finds love, chosen family and drag at the House of Borealis in East Van.

While this musical will make you laugh, cry and shake your booty, it also highlights themes of gender identity, homophobia and systemic racism against indigenous people.

Dillan Chiblow as Starwalker, gives a sensitive and at times, heart-breaking performance as he navigates the challenges of his life, past and present. Jeffrey Follis as Levi, is outstanding. His compassion, street smarts and style are at the heart of the show. The entire cast delivers strong performances.

This unique musical transcends boundaries not only in the narrative of the storyline, but also musical styles combining Broadway rock pop rhythms with traditional indigenous voices and beats.

Starwalker is entertaining, fun and provocative. Go see it! You won’t be disappointed.
