stɑl’əw̓ Pow Wow in Langley Shares Traditional Indigenous
Teachings and Healing for All, September 12-14
Fourth annual event celebrates Coast Salish pow wow culture in a
family friendly venue
Residents of and visitors to BC are invited to gather at the 4th Annual stɑl’əw̓ Pow Wow in Langley to witness the healing powers of traditional Indigenous drumming, singing, and dancing. Everyone is welcome to attend the stɑl’əw̓ Pow Wow, one of the largest events of its kind in Metro Vancouver.
This year’s fourth iteration of the festival is an important milestone. “The number 4 is culturally significant and connected to physical, spiritual, mental, and emotional well-being,” shares stɑl’əw̓ Arts & Cultural Society Manager q̓ʷɑt̓ic̓ɑ, Phyllis Atkins. “Think about the four directions and colours (black, white, red, yellow) of the medicine wheel and the four stages of life: baby, youth, adult, elder. They are celebrated at the stɑl’əw̓ Pow Wow, which takes place each year during the transition from the summer to fall seasons on the shared lands of the four host First Nation communities: qʼʷa:n̓ƛʼən̓, q̓ic̓əy̓, Máthxwi, and Se’mya’me’.”
Drive, ride, or dance your way to the Langley Events Centre on September 12, 13, and 14 to witness and support intergenerational transfer of traditional songs, dances, regalia, languages, medicines, foods, and artwork. Fill your ears, eyes, bellies, and hands with curated Indigenous ways of being, knowing, and eating.
Bring yourself, some friends and family to spend a few hours, a day, or the entire weekend at the stɑl’əw̓ Pow Wow. The Orange Shirt and Red Dress Specials will take place on September 13. Drum groups and dancers will perform, sharing their healing medicine to honour and support Residential School Warriors and Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-spirit peoples (MMIWG2S) and their families. Juno award-winning artist Fawn Wood will be performing solo during the evening of September 13 and with the Host Drum group Cree Confederation over the course of the weekend.
This year’s pow wow will showcase additional sponsored special competitions. These include the 2nd Annual Hat and Boot Dance, Braeden’s Prairie Chicken Dance, Taa’baa’ha Dancing Horse White’s Junior Boys Fancy Spotlight Dance, and an All-Women’s Drum Group competition. The arena at the Langley Events Centre is going to thunder with drumming, singing, and dancing.
