There is something to be said for travelling in the shoulder season. The crowds are smaller, the pace is calmer, and rates are often far more appealing. With birthdays falling in late March and early April, my wife and I decided a short getaway would be the perfect way to celebrate both occasions.
We had been hearing plenty of positive talk about the Summerland Waterfront Resort, and with it located less than an hour from home and close to the wineries of the Bottleneck Drive, it seemed an ideal choice for a couple of relaxing days.

From the moment we arrived, the welcome was warm and genuine. Our one-bedroom suite was spacious, spotless, and thoughtfully equipped.

It had everything you could need for a comfortable stay: a full kitchen, fireplace, private patio, two televisions, a soaker tub, and a separate shower. It struck a nice balance between hotel luxury and condo convenience.

I also appreciated that the suite was well set up for anyone needing to bring a laptop to catch up on work or simply settle into a comfortable chair with a book and enjoy some uninterrupted quiet time.

The resort’s lakeside setting is one of its biggest strengths. Walking paths along the water invite a leisurely stroll, and bicycles are available for those who prefer to explore on two wheels. Our room was peaceful and quiet, with lovely views of Okanagan Lake and the mountains beyond. The design of the property appears to make the most of the setting, with many rooms enjoying a similar outlook.
Amenities include a pool, hot tub, sauna, fitness room, and access to spa services through the on-site iKhaya Day Spa, making it easy to settle into holiday mode.
Dining at Shaughnessy’s Cove

The on-site restaurant, Shaughnessy’s Cove, was another highlight. We were greeted by Peter at the bar, who immediately suggested we take a window table overlooking the lake rather than the booth we had chosen. It was excellent advice.

The room feels bright and welcoming, and the staff clearly enjoy what they do. Service was prompt and friendly throughout our stay. The sticky chicken wings were a standout, and I was pleased to see a choice of two IPAs on tap. We both enjoyed chatting with our server, Daniel.

Breakfast in the Bistro was equally enjoyable. On our first morning, Emily looked after us with warmth and efficiency, and our meals were excellent.

As a tea drinker, I was especially happy to see a strong selection available.

On our final day, we ordered a breakfast basket delivered to the room. It was generous to say the least: fruit, yogourt, granola, pastries, and juice, with more than enough for two adults.
One Small Suggestion
If I have one recommendation, it would be that for first-time visitors, when you pull into the parking lot iKhaya Day Spa, and Shaughnessy’s Cove restaurant are easy to spot, but the entrance to the lobby is hard to find. We finally found it by noticing the ‘Registration Only’ on the last two parking spots. Clearer signage for the main lobby entrance would be helpful.
Final Thoughts
Over the years, we have stayed in many excellent hotels, and this one ranks with the best of them. Every part of the experience felt polished, comfortable, and genuinely welcoming.
The resort came highly recommended by friends, so I expected it to be good. Even so, it managed to exceed expectations. We are already planning a return visit in the fall and will be recommending it to others.
If you are looking for a peaceful Okanagan escape with comfort, views, and easy access to wineries, the Summerland Waterfront Resort is well worth a visit.
