South-of-the-Border-Inspired Hotspot Pulls Out all the Stops with Extended Patio
on Jim Deva Plaza, Guest DJs, Partial Proceeds Donated to Pride Vancouver
As Vancouver gets set to let its rainbow flags fly and celebrate diversity and inclusivity in all its forms, Barra Gitano is gearing up for Pride Weekend with a full slate of activities and food and drink features at the south-of-the-border-inspired hotspot in the heart of the city’s vibrant West End (1202 Davie Street).
Beginning Fri., Aug. 1 and continuing through the Long Weekend, Barra Gitano will get into the spirit of Pride with an extended patio located in Jim Deva Plaza featuring a live DJ. on Friday and early openings at 2 p.m. on Sat., Aug. 2 during a Garden of Sin Block Party and Sun., Aug. 3 for a Pride Parade Block Party showcasing local DJs on site from 4 p.m. to late.
Partial proceeds from sales throughout the weekend will be donated to the Vancouver Pride Society — a not-profit organization that produces events that reflect the pride the 2SLGBTQA!+ community has by strengthening the sense of togetherness and contributing to the vibrancy, health and overall well-being of all persons who wish to celebrate.
“There’s no place like Davie Village when it comes to Pride Weekend,” says Co-Owner Erik Heck. “It’s such a vibrant, eclectic neighbourhood that comes alive this time of year and we look forward to welcoming locals and visitors alike to celebrate Pride in all its forms and give a little back to the community at large.”
Throughout the weekend, Barra Gitano will keep the good vibes going with a Pride-themed menu of food and drink features that includes:
PA’ EMPAZAR (Appetizers)
Guacamole (fresh avocado, cilantro, roasted garlic + jalapeño, white onion, lime juice, cheese, corn tortilla chips);
Salsa Quemada (roasted tomatoes + chilis, corn tortilla chips);
Chipotle Fries (French fries, chipotle salt, serrano + garlic aioli);
Tuna Tostada (marinated Ahi tuna, guacamole, chipotle aioli, sesame seeds, corn tortilla);
Roasted Cauliflower (paprika aioli, serrano lime soy, toasted pumpkin seeds).
LOS FUERTES (Entrées)
Guajillo Prawns (garlic guajillo prawns, wine chorizo, truffle mashed potatoes);
Smash Burger (Alberta beef, cheddar crisp, caramelized onion + jalapeño, avocado, lettuce, serrano + garlic aioli, brioche bun, chipotle fries);
Buñuelo de Barbacoa (beef barbacoa, guacamole, black beans, cheddar cheese, pickled red onions, iceberg lettuce, habanero sauce, flour tortilla);
Enchiladas (chicken or mushroom, layered milpa tortilla, refried beans, salsa verde, Oaxaca cheese gratin).
TACOS (three per order)
Pork Belly (confit pork belly, salsa macha, avocado purée, cured red onion, corn tortilla, spicy aioli);
Ribeye Campechano (ribeye, chorizo, chicharron, guacamole, onion + cilantro, salsa verde, corn tortilla);
Fish (battered ling cod, cheese, pickled habanero cabbage + onions, cucumber, guacamole, manzano chili aioli, flour tortilla, jalapeño salsa).
PA’ ACABAR (dessert)
Churros (cinnamon sugar, chocolate sauce).
Barra Gitano’s Pride Weekend cocktail menu features a list of signature libations such as the Gitano Margarita (Cuervo tradicional reposado, triple sec, guava purée, lime), Spicy Pineapple Mezcalita (400 conejos mezcal, pineapple syrup, pineapple bitters, habanero tincture, lime), ‘Catching Feelings’ (Driftwood Contact gin, 400 Conejos mezcal, passion fruit syrup, lime, soda) and ‘Something Tiki’ (Captain Morgan original spiced rum, licor 43, pineapple juice, pineapple bitters, lime), as well as local craft beer on draught and import selections available by bottle and can.
Situated in the heart of the West End at the corner of Bute and Davie in the site of the former Mary’s on Davie, Barra Gitano is the latest project for the ownership team of Heck, John Crook and Chef Francisco Higareda, who also operate The Flying Pig and Ophelia Cocina Mexicana in Olympic Village and Gastown’s Monarca.
