KŌPAREPARE WINES: GOOD WINE, SHARED PURPOSE

Fresh, expressive and rooted in the simple idea of giving back, Kōparepare pairs New Zealand’s signature Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc with seafood-friendly dining and a commitment to healthier oceans.

Kōparepare takes its name from the te reo Māori word for “gift” or “contribution” – a philosophy that shapes every bottle. The concept is refreshingly straightforward: craft an approachable Sauvignon Blanc that captures the freshness of Marlborough while supporting the waters that have long defined the region.

Produced by Whitehaven, the family-owned winery founded by Sue and Greg White, reflects the vibrant character that has made Marlborough one of the world’s benchmark regions for Sauvignon Blanc. Bright citrus, tropical fruit, fresh herbs and a distinct mineral freshness speak to its coastal origins, while the story behind the label reaches well beyond the vineyard.

That connection to the ocean began long before the winery. In the early 1990s, Greg and Sue White left their corporate careers to sail the Pacific aboard their 48-foot yacht with their infant daughter, Samantha. Sheltering in the Marlborough Sounds during hurricane season, they found a place that would ultimately change their lives. In 1994, they founded Whitehaven, naming the winery after the quiet harbour that first welcomed them.

In 2019, that affinity with the sea inspired the launch of Kōparepare as a wine with purpose. In New Zealand, the brand supports LegaSea, helping fund marine conservation, advocacy and education through contributions that now exceed $225,000.

Its expansion into Canada feels like a natural extension of that mission. Recognizing Vancouver’s close relationship with the ocean, Whitehaven partnered with Ocean Wise, with a portion of every bottle sold and every glass poured at participating Cactus Club Café locations supporting ocean conservation initiatives. To mark the Canadian launch, Kōparepare presented Ocean Wise with a $6,000 donation.

The Pour

Pale straw in colour, Kōparepare opens with vibrant aromas of guava, passionfruit, lime sherbet, lemongrass and freshly cut herbs. The palate is dry and energetic, balancing bright citrus fruit with lively acidity and a clean mineral finish that is unmistakably Marlborough. Expressive without excess, it delivers freshness, precision and remarkable drinkability

At the Table

Seafood is its natural partner: oysters with mignonette, scallop ceviche, ahi tuna sushi, grilled prawns and crab all highlight the wine’s citrus-driven acidity and saline edge. The wine’s acidity lifts richer textures, its citrus notes brighten briny flavours, and its herbal edge works beautifully with fresh greens, chilli, ginger and coriander.

Kōparepare succeeds because its purpose never overshadows the wine itself. From the vineyards of Marlborough to the shores of Vancouver, it offers a reminder that the simplest pleasures, a well-made Sauvignon Blanc, fresh seafood and good company, can also support something far greater.
