Latin American Heritage Month: Day of the Dead Festivities

Latin American Heritage Month: Day of the Dead Festivities
at Granville Island, Oct 31-Nov 1

As the eighth annual Latin American Heritage Month Festival continues, I wanted to share an upcoming Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration taking place October 31 and November 1 at Granville Island.

Hosted by Latincouver, this two-day, all-ages event will bring together Latin American culture, food, art and music, featuring a vibrant artisan market with more than 20 vendors, live Latin music, food vendors serving favourites such as tacos, empanadas, arepas, tamales and traditional pan de muerto, and hands-on workshops, including sugar skull decorating and Catrina lantern making.

Workshop fees apply, and advance registration is available online, here.

From 7 p.m. on Saturday, October 31, the celebration continues with the Catrina Party, featuring live music by Empanadas Ilegales and their signature blend of psychedelic cumbia and salsa-infused beats.

A community Día de los Muertos altar will also be on display at Ocean Artworks Pavilion, offering visitors an opportunity to remember and honour loved ones by leaving offerings, including photographs, and other small gifts.

Event Details:

Saturday, October 31: 11 a.m. – 11 p.m.
Sunday, November 1: 11 a.m. – 8 p.m.
Market, food vendors, and Catrina Party: 1500 Old Bridge St., Granville Island
Workshops and community altar: Ocean Artworks Pavilion, 1531 Johnston St., Granville Island

The celebration offers a wonderful opportunity to experience the traditions of Día de los Muertos through food, music, art and community.
