A vessel containing the best Clam Chowder in sourdough bread bowls has made its way to Vancouver harbour and parked itself to stay in Gastown. The eatery has opened its doors and is proud to be one of the only restaurants in Vancouver to serve clam chowder, San Fanscisco style, in a cozy little nook with exposed brick on 221 Abbott Street.

Loaded Baked Potato Bowl

The concept was inspired by co-owner Ashton Phillips’ trips with the family to San Franscisco’s Pier 39 and Fisherman’s Warf. Phillips, who is originally from Sonoma County, California says, “When I moved to Vancouver six years ago, I noticed that no one really served clam chowder in sourdough bread bowls like they do back home. I saw a gap in the market, sought out an investor who became my business partner, Patryk Drozd; we developed the concept and made the magic happen.”

Keeping family in the business, Phillips got his talented cousin, Chef Partrick Hennessy of Kissa Tanto, to create the menu. The Crab Park Chowdery boasts a repertoire of five comforting chowders and soups, ready to serve in savory sourdough bread bowls or in 8oz and 16 oz, beautifully branded cups. Two of these five soups are veggie and vegan friendly.  The artisan bread makers at the local Swiss Bakery make their delicious San Fransisco sourdough style bread bowls.

The Menu

The traditional New England Chowder is Phillips’ grandmother’s recipe, which was already perfect, but Hennessy has taken it to a whole new level by adding his own flare into it. Some people have claimed that this is the best chowder they ever had!

The loaded baked potato soup is a potato and leek based soup, loaded with sour cream, bacon and green onions, making it taste like a baked potato straight out of the oven.

The smokey tomato soup is one of the meatless options served at the chowdery, served in a cheese lined bread bowl, making it like an amazing built-in grilled cheese tomato soup. It can be made vegan by subbing out the cheese.

The vegan chilli is a meatless chilli that Hennessy created, made with hearty medley of beans, tomatoes, a variety of peppers and spices for that extra kick.

The rotating soup of the day is usually of the chowder variety. Some of the favourite rotating soups have been a red pepper chowder, a cream of mushroom soup with a chowdery flare, french onion soup, broccoli cheese, crab seafood chowder. They are always adding to the list.

The Crab Park Chowdery has opened its doors since mid-January and has been thrilled by the communities’ welcoming response.

221 Abbott Street, Vancouver, BC.

The Chowdery is looking forward to delighting your taste buds with what some have claimed is the best chowder they have tasted!
