Happy Wine Wednesday! It’s time for our 2nd annual Rosé Smack Down!
Michael Bartier and David Scholefield are once again defending their favourite rosés. Michael Bartier is on team Haywire while David Scholefield is putting up a fight for Bartier Scholefield. Here’s what they have to say about their favourite rosés:
Michael Bartier on the Haywire Rosé:
Wine should be judged on its ability to evoke and articulate its origin. The 2011 Haywire Gamay Noir Rosé is a wine of the Okanagan Valley, specifically the Secrest Mountain Vineyard. Being from there, we know it is grown in glacial till rich in minerals, with calcium carbonate, granite, and basalt present.
Our lexicon includes the words “fresh”, “pristine”, “beautiful”, “clean”, “bright”, “crisp”, “bountiful”, “refreshing”, and so on.
With the Gamay Noir Rosé, we have a wine with aromas of minerality, fresh berries and tree fruits, and with a remarkable and pristine refreshing structure. To conclude if this is a great wine or not, I’ll simply refer to a quote from a great man, “Great wine articulates, great wine evokes, and of course, great wine tastes great.”
David Scholefield on the Bartier Scholefield Rosé:
For us in the Okanagan, if place matters, rosé matters.
We believe that Okanagan rosé can be one of the world’s classic cool-climate wine styles, proving once and for all that rosé can be very much more than sweet, concocted ‘vino-pop’.
BS Rosé is 100% Gamay, always destined to be pink not red, with the belief that rosé is the highest and best use of this fruit. The wine is lipsmackingly crisp, with tangy, cranberry/raspberry fruit and a lovely leafy/earthy undertone. Like all great rosés, it has the tannic grip that proclaims seriousness; but it also has the astonishing glossy texture that makes great rosé such a joy to drink, and finishes with a sage-y savoury note that is pure Okanagan DNA.
