Clos du Soleil Winery

Earlier this year, I was invited to a trade event at the Tap and Barrel in Coal Harbour, near the Vancouver Convention Centre.  The occasion was a release of Clos du Soleil wines.

Clos du Soleil is a small ten-acre winery located on Upper Bench Road in Keremeos, BC.  It was founded in 2006, by a group of business professionals, with a passion for Bordeaux style wines.  They have planted Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon grapes on their property, which is flanked by heat reflecting mountains.  Following in the French tradition, they have embraced biodynamic vineyard practices and the importance of terroir in their winemaking.

Among the familiar faces at Clos du Soleil are Spencer Massie, one of the company’s directors and the renowned Ann Sperling, who has made their wines since 2009.  In 2013, Michael Clark joined the team to oversee vineyard and winery operations.

They have nine wines in their portfolio, which includes a rosé and a Sauternes-style dessert wine.  I am a big fan of all their wines, so it is difficult to pick a favourite.  At the event, I tasted their Rosé, which is made from Cabernet Sauvignon and is a terrific food wine, their Fumé Blanc, one of the best Sauvignon Blancs that BC has to offer, and their classy Bordeaux styled red, Signature.  This wine often places at or near the top in tastings of iconic BC red wines.  Do yourself a favour, and give them a try.  You won’t be disappointed.
