Westwood Wines Wine Tasting June 13th – 16th

At Westwood Wines this week, they are tasting wines from 50th Parallel Estate on Friday, June 13th and new releases from Cassini Cellars of Oliver from Saturday June 14th to Tuesday June 16th.  Alice, a representative for 50th Parallel will be in the store on Friday, from 4 to 7 to pour wines.

50th Parallel Estate is a relatively new winery; the northern-most winery along the Scenic Sip Trail in Lake Country.  They have a fabulous site with west facing slopes, which get the reflected sunlight from the lake and granite soil, which Pinot Noir loves.  They have big plans to further develop the winery, so stayed tuned for more.  The wines being tasted are:

2012 Pinot Gris

A beautiful fruity and crisp wine with aromas of nectarine and gala apple followed by a palate full of complex white peach, stone fruit, and pear. Drink with salads, salmon, chicken and pork dishes.

2013 Riesling

This has a classic citrus, lemon-lime personality with distinct mineral notes, nice tension and a vibrant, juicy acidity lingering through the close.

2012 Gewürztraminer

Juicy exotic peach, melon, and lychee flavours, wonderful with spicy crab, Indian dishes, sushi, and pork, perhaps with fresh fruit salsa.

2013 Pinot Noir Rosé

The rose has a coppery tinge to its ruby hue and it offers aromas of strawberries, cranberries, blood oranges, sweet spice, wild flowers and vanilla. The palate follows suit; red berry and cherry and orange peel flow into vanilla, cedar and sweet spices. It’s not a dry rosé, but it’s not confectionary sweet either. It is assisted with some decent structure and lively acidity.

2012 Pinot Noir

This magical wine is truly representative of the best of the Pinot Noir varietal has to offer in the Okanagan Valley. An amazing warm vintage framed by beautiful warm nights brought perfect sugar and acid balance to the 2012 vintage.

Adrian’s Cassini Cellars is located along the sun drenched Golden Mile, between Oliver and Osoyoos.  Included in his tasting are:

2013 Mama Mia

This is a blend of Pinot Gris, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Muscat Orange.  The wine boasts a bouquet of tropical and citrus notes with hints of peach and apricot and finishes clean with an ongoing linger of pear and pineapples. Best drunk now or over the next 2 years.

2012 Chardonnay Reserve

This Chardonnay is rich in aromas of apple, peach and tropical notes wrapped in subtle layers of vanilla, spice and tobacco.  The wine leaves long lingering flavours with perfect balance of oak, green apples and vanilla.  Pairs well with oysters, strong and mild cheese, chicken, appetizers or pasta.

2013 Red Carpet Pinot Noir

This is a light to medium bodied wine with delicate aromas of cherry, anise vanilla and blackcurrant with a nice fruity red berry and toffee finish. Subtle and mild tannins make this wine a perfect red sipper to enjoy with friends over a nice casual meal.

Note:  All descriptors listed above are from the winery’s notes.
