This summer celebrate Bard on the Beach’s 25th anniversary by attending one of the many special events under the tents in Vanier Park in addition to the productions currently playing in the BMO Mainstage and the Howard Family Stage. During the month of July, Bard is hosting Gazing Back – Reflecting on 25 Years at Bard, Bard B Q & Fireworks nights and the Bard Explored series.
Gazing Back – Reflecting on 25 Years at Bard Join Christopher Gaze, the Artistic Director of Bard on the Beach, as he recalls highlights, hiccups and some well-kept secrets from twenty-five years of fascinating Festival history. The founding force behind Vancouver’s signature summer theatre event begins with his early vision for his life, carries on through his travels west and finally explores the creation and success of Western Canada’s largest Shakespeare festival. With musical accompaniment. Performance dates* for Gazing Back are July 14, August 11, and September 12 at 7:30pm. Tickets are $25. *(originally advertised dates of July 28 and Sept 9 have been cancelled due to scheduling conflicts).
Enjoy performances of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Tempest, Equivocation and/or Cymbeline, followed by a delicious dinner and then a thrilling sword-fighting display and improv comedy. Wrap it up with an up-close view of the Celebration of Light fireworks and it’s a one-of-a-kind, spectacular Festival experience. Each evening includes performances of the season’s plays followed by a salmon barbecue and dessert (cash bar) and entertainment. Tea and coffee will also be served before the fireworks display. Performance dates/times for Bard B Q and Fireworks are Saturday July 26, WednesdayJuly 30 and Saturday August 2 at 4:30pm (NOTE new 2014 start time). Tickets are $99 and include the play, dinner and post-dinner entertainment.
Enhance your Bard experience by taking in one or more of our public talks. Saturdays at 11:30 am Bard on the Beach presents Discovering Shakespeare with Mary Hartman. New this season, Discovering Shakespeare provides a comprehensive introduction to each of the four plays in our season on a Saturday morning prior to the matinee. Bard’s Director of Education Mary Hartman delivers an hour long background on the story, characters, language and historical context of the play, with her signature warmth and enthusiasm. Tickets are $10 and dates for Discovering Shakespeare are: June 28 A Midsummer Night’s Dream, July 5 The Tempest, August 9 Cymbeline and August 23 Equivocation. In the Exploring Shakespeare series, Simon Fraser University’s Paul Budra delivers in depth explorations of each play in his lively and engaging style. Go beyond the story and explore Shakespeare’s inspirations and influences on Monday’s throughout the season at 7:30 pm. Have all your questions answered and leave with a fuller, deeper understanding and appreciation of this season’s plays. Bard on the Beach is Western Canada’s largest professional Shakespeare company and its Artistic Director is Christopher Gaze. It presents its annual summer festival in Kitsilano’s Vanier Park, adjacent to Vancouver’s downtown core.
