The Arts Club Theatre Company opens its 2026-2027 season with the BC premiere of Heist at the Stanley BFL Canada Stage. From the moment the lights go down and the opening credits roll, you know you’re in for a caper.
Think Mission: Impossible meets Ocean’s Eleven, but with the fun of watching all that movie magic happen live on stage. The real trick of Heist is that it doesn’t simply try to imitate film. Instead, it takes the language of cinema: quick cuts, flashbacks and sudden twists and turns it into something that feels surprisingly theatrical.
Marvin, a criminal mastermind, assembles the usual dream team: a con artist, hacker, cat burglar and strongman. Their target is a multimillion-dollar ruby, but when the supposedly flawless plan goes sideways and the gem turns out to be glass, things get complicated. Then comes the promise of an even bigger diamond, sending the crew back into action.
The problem? Their biggest threat may not be the security system. It may be each other.
Charlie Gallant gives Marvin the composure of a man who believes he is always several moves ahead, while Patti Allan’s Spider keeps everyone guessing. Tainui Kuru brings a vulnerability to Ryan, Andrew McNee gives volatile energy as Kruger, and Alexandra Lainfiesta makes Angie’s physical daring feel completely natural. Jennifer Tong rounds out an ensemble that works particularly well together. You’re never quite sure who is telling the truth or who might be setting the next trap.
There’s also a darker thread running underneath all the glossy fun. Marvin’s references to Edgar Allan Poe’s The Cask of Amontillado hint at revenge and entrapment, reminding us that this isn’t just a lighthearted game of who gets the diamond. In this world, charm can be a disguise, and trust can be just another part of the con.
Heist is fast, funny and visually inventive. But for me, the real pleasure is watching a familiar movie genre transformed for the stage and being reminded just how much fun live theatre can have with a good illusion.
Heist plays at the Stanley BFL Canada Stage from September 17 through October 18, 2026. Showtimes: Tuesdays at 7:00 p.m.; Wednesdays at 1:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.; Thursdays and Fridays at 7:30 p.m.; Saturdays at 1:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.; and Sundays at 2:00 p.m. The theatre is dark on Mondays.
