No Lunch Bag Letdown at Salted Brick

Just over a year ago, Salted Brick on Kelowna’s Bernard Avenue started a small goodwill outreach program – distributing bagged lunches on Mondays to the homeless in the downtown core. The bagged lunches are made and packed at Salted Brick and consist of a sandwich, a juice box, fruit and a baked good. To date, almost 2000 healthy sandwiches have been made and distributed.

Over the months, generous individuals and businesses such as Sysco, SunRype, Harker’s Organics, Sandrine French Pastry & Chocolate and others have all helped with donations to this grassroots bag lunch program.

Although this small effort to feed the homeless is very successful, Chef Leizert and the team at Salted Brick are now working to grow the program with the assistance of their supportive community.

A GoFundMe initiative to raise $15,000 towards a food bike/food cart and the needed supplies to further build the bag lunch program will launch Monday, September 28th.

The concept is simple – Salted Brick will serve sandwiches from the food bike/food cart throughout the week, and guests can purchase a sandwich for themselves and a token towards a meal for the homeless.

The token program, similar to the program Leizert worked with in Vancouver at Save-On Meats, allows guests of Salted Brick and the community to purchase a token which can be distributed to the homeless directly to be exchanged for a bag lunch, or you can have Salted Brick distribute. It allows you to easily contribute to their efforts of feeding the homeless with their bag lunch program. The team at Salted Brick also plan to further expand their program to include off-site food bike/food cart catering with 25% of proceeds going back to this grassroots program.

To kick off the GoFundMe campaign, on Monday, September 28^th you can grab a yourself a delicious breakfast sandwich and make a donation to the Lunch Bag project. Breakfast will be served starting at 8:30 am while quantities last. We invite you to join us at Salted Brick, enjoy a sandwich and help kick off this expansion of the Bag Lunch Program. These sandwiches are perfect to enjoy on site, at home or the office.
