CHEF VIJ KICKS OFF OCTOBER COOKING CLASSES

EARTHBITES SCHOOL FOOD AND NUTRITION PROGRAM

 

Chef Vikram Vij of Vij’s has joined Vancouver’s top chefs in their quest to teach a series of adult cooking classes to raise funds for EarthBites, a local non-profit initiative that teaches children how to grow and cook their own food.

 

Chef Vikram Vij (Vij’s Restaurant) kicks off the October offerings of the adult cooking class fundraiser on October 5 with Perfecting Rice Pilafs.

 

Chef Robert Clark (The Fish Counter) will share his secrets for Sustainable Seafood Cooked Right on October 7.

 

Urban growing expert Brendan Young will get in on the action by teaching a class on how to grow your own garlic whether you have a full garden, community plot or a 2 foot patio with his class Best Garlic Ever on October 8.

 

Additional cooking classes include:

∑         Oct 20 – Shelome Bouvette (Chica), Modern Peruvian Cooking

∑         Oct 22 – Linda Antony (Meet on Main), Vegan, Gluten Free & Tasty

∑         Nov 4 – Oliver Zulauf (Rocky Mountain Flatbread), The Perfect Pizza.

 

All classes will be held at the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition in Vancouver. EarthBites goes into schools to teach thousands of kids how to grow and cook their own healthy meals. The children are instructed by a dedicated team of urban growers, nutritionists and entrepreneurs who are passionate about engaging children with the food they eat.

 

Children’s health and nutrition is such an important issue for local communities especially given the increasing concerns about childhood obesity and diabetes in Canada. With studies showing that only 30% of children meet Canada’s Food Guide recommendations for the minimum number of vegetable and fruit servings each day, the importance of engaging with kids on the topic of food and nutrition is clear.

 

“It’s so much more than a school gardening program,” explains founder Suzanne Fielden. “The children learn how to grow, harvest, craft and sell their food and they also learn about nutrition.”

 

EarthBites is currently partnering with five Vancouver schools, and was founded in Vancouver in 2007 by the Rocky Mountain Flatbread Education Society.
