World Music Concert Brings Together Top Musicians To Help Surrey Kids Access Arts Program
With a benefit concert at the Surrey Arts Centre on February 12, 2016, renowned B.C. percussionist Salvador Ferreras and Drum Heat are helping Surrey kids access the arts.
The lifelong benefits of the arts is something Ferreras, a B.C. Entertainment Hall of Fame inductee, feels passionate about. “This is why helping Surrey kids access the arts at Arts Umbrella is important,” says Ferreras. Since Arts Umbrella opened two Surrey locations in 2012, the non-profit organization has reached more than 5,500 local students and provided free community programs for thousands more at its studios and in Surrey schools.
This benefit concert brings together 14 talented musicians, including some of Surrey’s most outstanding world music and jazz artists, such as pianist Miles Black, bassist Jodi Proznick, and percussionists Gurpreet Sian, Rayman and Karn Bhuller. Ilhan Saferali, an astounding young 12-year-old piano master will join the talented group to round out the performance. Audiences can expect an electric evening of drumming from Latin America, Brazil, Cuba, India, and more, all while helping create arts opportunities for at-risk local children.
Ferreras’ name is synonymous with drumming in Metro Vancouver, and his highly acclaimed Drum Heat performances have inspired a generation of musicians on the West Coast. This concert continues that legacy of inspiring music and creativity, by helping Arts Umbrella reach more kids with its high-quality dance, theatre, media, and visual arts programs. Drum Heat was born in 1986 at the Vancouver East Cultural Centre and has over this many years blossomed into an eclectic and ever-changing showcase of some of the most exciting and innovative musicians on the scene.
