Number 13 proved lucky for the Naramata Tailgate Party as tickets sold out in record time and autumn weather cooperated to facilitate another spectacular edition. While the wind whipped up at the beginning, it settled into a gorgeous evening for the not-to-be-missed al fresco event.
That’s more than a hint to check http://naramatabench.com/ regularly for the latest news on the Naramata Bench Wineries Association (NBWA) for advance warning on events like these. You’ll also want to click through the Wineries links to their web pages so you’re on top of all the announcements.
Red Rooster Winery, hosting for the second year in a row, was an idyllic setting for the NBWA annual fall wine tasting event and celebration of the coming of the harvest. Guests were invited to enjoy distinctive wines from 28 wineries, live music, and delicious cuisine collected from eight local chefs using tokens provided. There was also popcorn available and Upper Bench King Cole Blue Cheese on crisp Gone Crackers to try.

The token system proved to be a popular change. None of the stations that remained vigilant in collecting the tokens ran out of food. It was fun to watch some guests swap tokens to get a second helping of a favourite dish.
“Bench Bohemian” Costume Competition
The theme was “Bench Bohemian” to pay homage to the artistically unconventional lifestyles that are such a part of Naramata’s history. The grounds were decked out with festive lighting and Bohemian accents to complement the picture perfect views of vineyards, orchards and Okanagan Lake beyond.
For the costume competition, I was a judge along with prolific food writer Jennifer Cockrall-King and given the enthusiasm of participants, it was tough to select just three prize winners!
Prizes for best costumes were awarded to:
To add to the fun, opportunities were available to have tea leaf or tarot card readings and the zany spirit of the event could be captured at an onsite photo booth. Along with the musical entertainment, guests were encouraged to partake in an introductory belly dancing lesson.
Each year, the NBWA provides a new twist to delight newcomers as well as returning guests. It’s always a delicious surprise to discover which wines will be poured by the participating wineries. With such a selection, it’s a good thing shuttle service is provided complimentary from a location in Penticton and another in Naramata. (Ticket holders can opt to pay an additional fee for other shuttle locations.)
It’s one of those well-organized events that leaves you wondering what they’ll do next year to top this one. See you there same weekend, Saturday, next year!
