CAROUSEL THEATRE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE and TOUCHSTONE THEATRE present

The Lawyer Show 2018: The Drowsy Chaperone

May 3 – 5, 2018
Waterfront Theatre on Granville Island

Each spring, Vancouver’s legal community comes together to create this high-spirited event and a valued tradition, The Lawyer Show, a fundraiser for two of Vancouver’s most cherished theatre institutions: Carousel Theatre for Young People and Touchstone Theatre. More than 25 of Vancouver’s top law professionals are bringing wit and charm to this year’s production of the Tony award-winning Canadian musical The Drowsy Chaperone.

About The Lawyer Show
The Lawyer Show is the signature fundraising event for Carousel Theatre for Young People and Touchstone Theatre, both registered charities. CTYP and Touchstone have been producing theatre in Vancouver for over 40 years and have introduced theatre to hundreds of thousands of people of all ages. Both companies are cultural leaders in our community and inspire and develop new generations of theatre artists and patrons. Together they have received over 130 Jessie nominations in the past 10 years. The funds that are raised through The Lawyer Show go directly to support the producing and community outreach activities of the two companies. A superb example of Business and the Arts working together for community benefit, The Lawyer Show model has been copied in several cities and professions.

The Lawyer Show cast and band features over 25 lawyers from all walks of legal life—from partners in large corporate firms to retired practitioners. For a complete list of the cast and the band and their legal affiliations go to: www.carouseltheatre.ca/production/lawyershow/

About The Drowsy Chaperone
Winner of five Tony Awards, including Best Book and Best Original Score, The Drowsy Chaperone is a loving send-up of the Jazz Age musical, featuring one show-stopping song and dance number after another. It started as a wedding present for a couple of actors, lovingly created by their friends. It then went to the Toronto Fringe, then became a Mirvish hit in Toronto and then played Broadway and London’s West End. It’s a great Canadian show biz success story!

With the houselights down, a woman in an armchair appears on stage, welcomes us and puts on her favourite record: the cast recording of a fictitious 1928 musical comedy, The Drowsy Chaperone. The recording comes to life as she looks on, enthralled. We meet two lovers on the eve of their wedding, a bumbling best man, a desperate theatre producer, a ditzy chorus girl, a befuddled hostess, a trio of gangsters posing as pastry chefs, a misguided Don Juan, an intoxicated chaperone, an Aviatrix and a lively chorus of servants and wedding guests— ingredients for an evening of madcap delight.

Hailed by New York Magazine as “The Perfect Broadway Musical,” The Drowsy Chaperone is a masterful meta-musical, poking fun at all the tropes that characterize the musical theatre genre.
