Dancers of Damelahamid
The November edition of The Dance Centre’s popular Discover Dance! series features a performance by the Dancers of Damelahamid, an Indigenous dance company from the Northwest Coast of BC, with a rich history of masked dance which inspires compelling performances. Spirit and Traditionshares the treasures of the company’s heritage, through dramatic dance, captivating narrative, intricately carved masks and elaborate regalia, bridging the ancient with a living tradition. The performance will be followed by a moderated artist talkback.
Dancers of Damelahamid is founded upon over five decades of extensive work of song restoration. Since 2003, it has established itself as a pre-eminent professional Indigenous dance company, producing several theatre-based productions, and creating newly choreographed dance works. The company has produced the annual Coastal First Nations Dance Festival since 2008. Full-length works include Setting the Path (2004), Sharing the Spirit (2007) and Visitors Who Never Left (2009). Newly-created works include Spirit and Tradition (2010), Spirit Transforming (2012), In Abundance(2014) and Flicker (2016). www.damelahamid.ca
