FUSE Fall 2018 Announced: ‘Object Lessons’, night merging visual art, music and performance, takes over Vancouver Art Gallery on November 23
The city’s best-loved, late-night art party returns with FUSE: Object Lessons on Friday, November 23. This upcoming edition of Vancouver Art Gallery’s signature evening merging visual art, music and performance indulges in stories and myths of the material world.
In dialogue with the Gallery’s fall exhibitions, FUSE: Object Lessons will awaken guests to a new consciousness around bodies and objects as a way to transmit meaning, lessons, ideas and beliefs.
Featured artists will respond to the intricate works of Guo Pei: Couture Beyond, which blends Chinese cultural tradition and heritage with contemporary aesthetics. They will look at how a seemingly simple object—a dress—can be elevated beyond a functional object. FUSE artists will also respond to the exhibitions A Curator’s View: Ian Thom Selects and The Metamorphosis, which draw from the Gallery’s holdings, highlighting the rich narratives that exist between objects as a collection.
Specific to Dana Claxton: Fringing the Cube will be the program Small Practices of Deep Looking, which invites artists—Jamey Braden, Guadaloupe Martinez, Chandra Melting Tallow and Jeneen Frei Njootli—to respond to a specific force of single works within the show.
Additionally, the Gallery will host the dance/art collective Immigrant Lessons, who confront discrimination and promote equality through dance, music, fashion and visual design. Utilizing the audience as both medium and canvas, DJ Todd-Rod Skimmins Simmons will curate the night’s sounds.
Downtown Eastside independent radio station No Fun Radio will animate an artist bar as a space where sound and music function as therapy.
