Hy’s of Canada Honours Executive VP John Aisenstat with VCC Memorial Scholarship

One year since the passing of their beloved Executive VP John Aisenstat, Hy’s of Canada is partnering with Vancouver Community College to offer a scholarship in his name. Last night at an intimate dinner at the iconic Hy’s Vancouver location, colleagues and friends gathered to raise funds and raise a toast to the gentleman who was a true champion of the hospitality industry. Known for his passion for the business he literally grew up in, John Aisenstat was unfailing in his support of the staff who made his business a success for over 60 years. He was equally cognizant of the need to attract new talent in an increasingly competitive world.

Hy’s of Canada has a long history of giving back to the communities they operate in across Canada. In fact, there is a Hy Aisenstat endowment at BC’s Simon Fraser University for students returning from the workforce to hospitality studies. Looking for an appropriate way to honour John, and to honour the company’s belief in grassroots philanthropy, CEO Neil Aisenstat and COO Megan Buckley thought a scholarship would be the perfect fit.

Says Neil, “John’s approach to life was defined by honesty, humility, and generosity. We think he would be so proud of this partnership and the spirit of investment in the future of our industry.”

Funds raised at the First Annual John Aisenstat Memorial Dinner will go toward an endowment at Vancouver Community College to support students pursuing careers in the culinary and hospitality arts. Future dinners in Calgary, Winnipeg and Toronto, partnering with their local technical colleges, will continue to build on a commitment to supporting and giving back to the restaurant industry. In addition, John’s involvement in and passion for politics will be remembered through a donation to The Forum for Young Canadians.

Hy’s Steakhouse and Cocktail Bar has proudly been Canada’s premier steakhouse since 1955. Founded by Hy Aisenstat, Hy’s of Canada remains a family-run business and continues to set the standard for fine dining in the hospitality industry. Hy’s features a relaxed and refined atmosphere and serves perfectly grilled Canadian Prime steaks and hand-crafted cocktails with warm hospitality. Hy’s has four locations across Canada: Whistler, Vancouver, Calgary and Winnipeg, and is currently building a new flagship location in downtown Toronto.
