Introducing Rocky Mountain Flatbread South Surrey: An interview with owner Suzy Basra
We are delighted to introduce Suzy Basra, owner of the brand new Rocky Mountain Flatbread restaurant in South Surrey in this interview. Enjoy!
Q: Tell us a bit about you and your family!
SB: My husband and I have been married for 20 years, and we moved to Surrey from Vancouver 7 years ago. We have two kids – Ishaan, aged 10 and Syah, aged 7 – who love great pizza and could eat pizza every night!
Q: What brought you to Rocky Mountain Flatbread?
SB: My love for local food and hospitality began when I started working at The NAAM restaurant at 16 years old. The NAAM is a 24 hour restaurant that serves local fresh vegetarian food – everything is home made. I started bussing there and worked my way up to shift manager. I loved the fast paced hospitality vibe – welcoming people, serving people .. there is always something to do.
When parenthood arrived we found and fell in love with Rocky Mountain Flatbread – it was our go to restaurant with the kids. We loved everything about it – the kid friendly atmosphere, fresh local and natural ingredients, healthy food, the welcoming environment. When you arrive you feel like you are at home.
In Surrey, we were lacking a great family restaurant that serves natural fresh organic ingredients along with gluten, vegan and nut free options. I know a family whose first dining experience with the children will be at Rocky Mountain Flatbread Surrey because we have a nut free restaurant. The kids are 6 and 8 years, and so excited for their first restaurant experience!
Q: You mentioned you love eating local and sourcing local and natural ingredients for the restaurant. From farm to table, where do the ingredients for Rocky Mountain Flatbread menus come from?
SB: We are working with many local farmers – organic free range eggs are from Rabbit Rivers Farm in Richmond, milk from Birchwood Dairy Farm in Abbotsford, organic beef from Blue Goose, flour from Anita’s Organic Mill, and veggies from local farmers in the valley.
We have great local craft breweries that we are working with for our drinks menu including Four Winds Brewery in Ladner; Twin Sails in Port Moody; Steel & Oak in New Westminster – and coffee from Republica Coffee Roasters from Fort Langley.
Q: How has caring for the environment influenced the building of the new restaurant?
SB: I love how Rocky really cares about the environment – the zero waste menu, buying local ingredients, using reclaimed woods in their build out, ensuring their carbon footprint is zero.
I have had great fun building out the Surrey restaurant. I was so excited to see it all come together when the green wall went up, charred reclaimed fir ceilings, reclaimed fir long table and bar tops, we have church pews, the rose gold on the oven, lights and even the expresso machine. So much thought has been put into all the details. We have brought a little of the Vancouver restaurant vibe to Surrey!
Q: What do you have to offer for kids and families at Rocky Mountain Flatbread Surrey?
SB: We connect kids with their food through our family pizza making evenings on Sunday and Monday nights, and with our open kitchen so the kids can watch their pizzas being made. Our table play oven is super fun for little ones. We have a kid friendly, healthy menu and the most delicious house made brownies you will ever taste!
Q: What are your dreams for the future of Rocky Mountain Flatbread Surrey?
SB: My dreams for the future is to see my restaurant full of families and friends enjoying great local food and good times. I can’t wait! People in Surrey have just started to discover us – it is so nice to watch their faces light up when they walk in the door and see our fresh inviting dining room & also to hear how much they have enjoyed their food.
Q: What is your favourite saying or motto about life and/or food?
SB: “First we eat and then we do everything else.”
