BIPOC Canadians are constantly asked, “Where are you from”? Our passports say we are Canadian, but we can still feel ostracized. The films we chose this year are reflective of our struggle to find our “Home” – a place for our family, community and where we feel a sense of welcome and belonging.
I am proud to announce that all our programming this year is created by BIPOC Canadian filmmakers. When I told our programmers this would be our mandate going forward, they were at first apprehensive about finding enough content. The team rose to the challenge and are excited to be part of this history of Reelworld. Thank you to Lead Programmer, Ammar Keshodia and the rest of the programming team for the outstanding films and to Industry Programmer, Kulbinder Saran Caldwell for the excellent industry programming we are presenting this year.
Congratulations to all the selected filmmakers. Whether we see Canadians navigating complex home lives or recent Canadians creating new homes, these films illuminate the unique perspectives of our diverse people. All of this is only made possible with the generous support of our Sponsors and Funders who believe as strongly as we do that creating more opportunity for Canadian diversity on screens is vital to building a stronger and more inclusive Canada.
