Spin to Win. BC’s Biggest Spin-a-thon Fundraiser to Battle Cancer

Feel Good, Do Good – October 19 at Five Vancouver Cycling Studios

Ready, set, pedal. The NeXT Up Spin-a-thon is British Columbia’s largest exercise fundraiser to support nutrition and exercise programming for cancer patients in the province. Hundreds of riders will commit to one of six hourly spin classes at participating studios on Saturday, October 19. The purpose is to raise funds for an emerging area of cancer support – physical activity. Specifically, the funds will focus on ensuring patients have access to tools and information about the big benefits of physical fitness in treatment.

In 2013, BC Cancer researchers completed a three-year study on nutrition and exercise during Treatment (NExT), which proved that physical activity has positive outcomes for women diagnosed with breast cancer. There is now compelling evidence proving that exercise improves cancer treatment side effects and reduces risk of dying from other conditions. Proceeds from the NeXT Up Spin-a-thon, supporting the BC Cancer Foundation, will allow the NeXT team to set up specialized nutrition and exercise programming at centres throughout BC – available free of charge to cancer patients undergoing treatment.

Studios hosting the spin-a-thon include: Method Studios (Kitsilano & North Vancouver), Cadence Cycling (South Granville), Spin Society (Mount Pleasant), and TaG Cycling (Broadway). Riders can put together a team of six, keeping the same bike spinning from noon to 6pm, or ride as individuals for an hour each. Hourly classes with certified spin instructors will keep riders energized and refreshed throughout the day.

Registration includes: online fundraising page to support fundraising goals, an RYU branded cycling towel for each team member, the opportunity to win prizes (like a $1,500 Norco bike), as well as email support with fundraising, fitness, and nutrition tips. Each rider is encouraged to raise suggested pledges of $250 per bike. Spinners of all fitness levels have a great opportunity to feel good and do good while getting a great workout. Participants can register here and select their studio of choice. Supportive non-spinners have the option to make a direct donation here to sponsor a cancer survivor.
