Younger audiences and new formats are reshaping
classical music attendance in Canada
Classical music remains well established in Canada, but audience habits are evolving. New data from Classical Pulse, the first-ever global study by Candlelight by Fever, reveals how younger generations, innovative concert formats, and strong musical programming are helping drive engagement with classical music across the country.
Here are some of the key findings highlighting how Canadians are engaging with classical music today, and the role that innovative live experiences, such as Candlelight, are playing in attracting and expanding audiences.
Key findings on classical music in Canada
-
55% of Canadians say they have attended a classical music concert at least once in their lives, behind markets such as Spain (68%), Mexico (65%), and Brazil (63%).
-
Younger generations are leading engagement: more than 89% of Gen Z respondents in Canada attended at least one classical music concert in the past year.
-
Older audiences are attending less frequently: 46% of older Canadians who have ever attended a classical concert did not do so within the past year.
-
Canadians are embracing new ways to experience classical music: more than half of attendees have attended performances in non-traditional venues such as museums, hotels, and rooftops.
-
Innovative programming is in demand: nearly one-third of respondents identified genre-blending classical concerts as their preferred concert format.
What drives Canadians to attend Candlelight
-
-
The musical programme is Candlelight’s strongest attendance driver in Canada, with 88% of attendees citing it as a key reason for attending—the highest percentage among all markets surveyed.
-

-
Canadian audiences tend to arrive with some familiarity with classical music: only 24% of attendees had never attended a classical music concert before, one of the lowest shares of first-time classical concertgoers across all markets studied.
