Kim Uncorked: Welcome to my weekly wine recommendation.

Hi, I’m Kim, a passionate lover of wine, food, and any experience that brings the two together! In this weekly blog post, I share my thoughts on a wine that I’ve recently purchased from one of our local independent wine merchants. If you’d like to know more about me, I’ve included a brief bio following the post.

Bordeaux is renowned for its prestigious, high-priced wines, but did you know it’s also the largest-volume-producing AOC region in France? Beyond its famous classified growths, Bordeaux offers an incredible range of high-quality wines at reasonable prices. The 2019 Château La Gorce Cru Bourgeois is a perfect example of a wine that balances tradition, quality, and affordability, providing exceptional value.

Showcasing the elegance, structure, and savoury character of the Left Bank, Château La Gorce is located in the Médoc, just north of Saint-Estèphe. The historic 48-hectare estate dates back to the 1820s and has been owned by Emmanuel and Manna Martin since 2018, who have transitioned the vineyards to organic viticulture. As a Cru Bourgeois, Château La Gorce represents the classic Médoc style, combining ripe fruit, refined tannins, and a firm mineral backbone.

A blend of approximately 55% Merlot and 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2019 vintage delivers vibrant notes of crunchy red berries and dark cherry, layered with blackcurrant, cedar, tobacco leaf, flint and hints of smoky oak. Medium-bodied and elegantly structured, the wine’s soft tannins provide balance, while subtle spice and a refreshing acidity add depth and length. With its classic Bordeaux character and lingering finish, it pairs beautifully with rich red meats such as beef and venison, as well as aged cheeses.

Château La Gorce is also available at select BC Liquor Stores, vintage may vary.
