Offering 10% Off All Dine-In Orders from August 24th-30th
Phonatic Social is marking its first anniversary by offering guests 10% off all dine-in orders from August 24th to 30th at the beloved family run Vietnamese hotspot located in the heart of North Vancouver’s Central Lonsdale district at 751 Lonsdale Ave.
Open daily at 11:30 a.m. with Happy Hour from 2-5 p.m., Phonatic Social made its debut on the North Shore dining scene last August and quickly gained a fanatic following thanks to its cozy dining room, pet-friendly streetside patio and an elevated-yet-approachable menu of North Vietnamese-inspired fare. Phonatic’s culinary approach is focused on quality ingredients, careful preparation and respect for tradition, resulting in dishes that are at turns fresh, balanced and memorable.
“Every dish at Phonatic tells a story,” says Owner Nick Nguyen. “Whether it’s the soul-warming aroma or a Pho broth or the crisp freshness of herbs hand-picked from local markets, we honour our roots by staying true to time-honoured techniques while embracing the spirit of culinary innovation. We wanted to create a space that is more than a restaurant — it’s a place where stories are shared, friendships are deepened, and cultures come together around the table.”
“For me, this has never been just a job. Every day I come to the restaurant because I genuinely love creating experiences for our community. We want our guests to experience Vietnamese culture, hospitality and personality, and the warmth that defines our dishes and who we are as a people.”
The family roots at Phonatic run deep, with Nguyen teaming up with his mother-in-law Kim Anh to oversee the front of house and his uncle by marriage Anh (Andy) Hoàng helming the kitchen as Head Chef.
Hoàng brings more than 15 years of culinary experience to the helm, including 12 as an Executive Chef. Originally from the coastal city of Hải Phòng in Northern Vietnam, Hoàng’s passion for cooking began at an early age as part of a family that was deeply immersed in the restaurant industry. His grandmother, mother and extended family have all operated restaurants in the city since the early 1980s, which naturally shaped his love for cooking and inspired him to pursue a career in the culinary realm.
“Exceptional Vietnamese food doesn’t necessarily come from complexity,” says Hoang. “It comes from patience, consistency and having a deep respect for every ingredient. There are no shortcuts to authentic Vietnamese fare. In our kitchen, stocks are simmered patiently, marinades prepared from scratch, and every dish made with the time and care it deserves. At Phonatic, respect for tradition is the secret to transforming simple ingredients into truly memorable meals.”
While many local Vietnamese restaurants showcase a broad approach to the country’s cuisine, Phonatic proudly celebrates the distinctive flavours and traditions of Northern Vietnam. By focusing on regional specialties, cherished family recipes and authentic cooking techniques, Hoang and his team provide guests with a window to a style of Vietnamese cuisine that is still relatively unexplored in Vancouver’s culinary scene.
As part of its anniversary celebration, Phonatic sous chef James is preparing a special feature of Cơm Tấm (Vietnamese Broken Rice), which is widely regarded as one of the country’s most iconic dishes. Paired with expertly grilled meats, house-made sauce and fresh herbs, it reflects the beauty, simplicity, thoughtful preparation and bold flavours of Vietnamese cuisine and will be available for a limited time during Phonatic’s anniversary week.
One of the highlights of Hoang’s menu at Phonatic is the signature Pho Bò: Beef Noodle Soup built on a broth that is slowly simmered to perfection for 27 hours using beef bones and marrow to create a deep, natural richness and complemented by aromas of grilled ginger and onion and traditional pho spices such as cinnamon, star anise, black cardamom and coriander seed.
Another notable item is the Bánh Mi Dǎc Biêt, inspired by the famous Bánh Mi Pâté Côt Dèn from Hải Phòng in Nothern Vietnam that is renowned for its rich pâté tradition. Phonatic’s pork liver pâté is made using a regional recipe to create a rich, buttery flavour that is meant to be the star of a sandwich that is by design intentionally simpler and lighter, allowing the house-made pâté and ham to showcase one of Northern Vietnam’s most iconic street food experiences.
At the bar, Phonatic features a comprehensive selection of Old and New World wine, local craft and import beer as well as a selection of Vietnamese coffee drinks, zero-proof and non-alcoholic options and signature cocktails that include the: Pho Cocktail, and pho spices transformed into an elegant whiskey cocktail; Hà Giang Fire & Spice, which mingles mezcal, jalapeño and ginger and is inspired by the bold mountain flavours of Northern Vietnam; Maple & Calamansi Sour, which builds a bridge between Canada and Vietnam by combining maple syrup with bright notes of calamansi; Hanoi Silk, a refined and elegant drink inspired by the sophistication of Vietnam’s capital city; Smoky Negroni, a modern interpretation of the classic cocktail with layered smoky complexity; and North West Old Fashioned, featuring Canadian rye infused with Vietnamese lemongrass and five spice.
“Mixology has been my passion for years, and our cocktail program at Phonatic challenges the traditional expectation of what a Vietnamese restaurant can offer,” says Nguyen. “We want to show that Vietnamese ingredients, flavours and stories can also inspire thoughtful cocktails and contemporary techniques. Every drink is designed with the same intention as our food — to honour Vietnamese culinary culture while presenting it in a modern, creative and approachable way. We use every glass to tell another chapter of Vietnam’s story.”
