Two long time Vancouver hospitality operators have recently completed an agreement to lease the location formerly occupied by Railway Club and will reopen it as a new pub to serve the neighbourhood and local community.
Jeff Donnelly and long time business partner and friend Chad Cole will manage and operate this new pub. Renovations will be completed in the spring. They are both excited to be able keep this historic social spot alive, and breathe new life into a room that’s been welcoming Vancouverites since 1931.
“We know what the Railway Club meant to the city,” said Cole, “we’re planning to donate historic fixtures and interior elements to the Museum of Vancouver as a way of preserving its legacy.”
The last several years have been a struggle for Railway Club and other live music venues in Vancouver. After being on sale for the better part of a year, Railway Club closed in March 2016 standing empty since.
“We’ve hosted lots of live music at our pubs over the years, but unfortunately it’s not going to be a core element of this new pub,” said Cole. “We’re looking at some authentic ways we can pay tribute to the history of the location, and we’re going to work with the local live music community to keep the spirit of Railway Club alive.”
No live music. Standard pub. Donnelly is bringing the mediocrity Vancouver so badly needs. Look for sepia-toned images of music fans of yesteryear and a few artifacts to lend the venue its gritty authenticity.
