Latest Addition to Family of Restaurants Offers Tacofino’s Signature Baja-inspired Fare, Express Burritos To Go, Local Craft and Import Beer and Cocktails
Tacofino welcomes the newest member to its growing family of restaurants today when it brings its Baja-inspired cuisine and surf-centric style to a new counter-service oasis in the heart of downtown Vancouver at 1050 West Pender Street.
Tacofino’s ‘White Lightning’ food truck has been a familiar sight nearby at Dunsmuir and Burrard since 2012. Now, Tacofino Oasis offers financial district denizens a licensed 40-seat dining room and patio and a variety of made-to-order eat-in and to-go menu items, as well as two grab-and-go ‘express’ burritos for those on the run.
Open Monday to Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., this new location is the latest addition to a family business that was launched in 2009 when Tacofino co-owners Jason Sussman and Kaeli Robinsong opened the original Tacofino Cantina at the back of the Live to Surf parking lot in Tofino, BC and quickly gained a following thanks to their trademark quality, fresh and affordable fare with an environmental and nutritional conscience.
In keeping with Tacofino’s tradition of designing a menu unique to each location, Sussman and new Regional Executive Chef Stefan Hartmann created new taco options such as Pacific Cod, Beef, Duck and Tofu; burritos in Pork Belly, Crispy Chicken, Duck, Cod Barbacoa and Cauliflower & Beet varieties; and Happy Hour features like Nachos, Beef Tamales and Crispy Octopus. Exclusive to this location, Tacofino Oasis is also introducing two ‘express’ burrito options — Beef and Bean & Cheese — available hot and ready all day. As with all Tacofino fare, each dish proudly features ingredients that are Ocean Wise-approved, antibiotic- and hormone-free, raised ethically and made locally.
“We’ve felt at home in this neighbourhood for years now with our ‘White Lightning’ truck, so it’s just a natural next step for us to set down some more permanent roots here,” says Sussman. “It’s been a wild ride for me and Kaeli and we’re grateful for all the love and support shown for Tacofino since the start.”
Vancouver designer Shiloh Sukkau — who collaborated with longtime friend Robinsong on the décor of Tacofino Oasis — turned to a wide-ranging palette of materials and influences to infuse the rustic-yet-glamorous feel of a mid-century Mexican resort in the new location. To that end, Sukkau conjured up a true oasis amidst the concrete towers of the surrounding Financial District courtesy of walls and ceiling bathed in ‘pool’ blue, woven bar stools and red mesh patio chairs, pink concrete modular two-tops, a recycled marble terrazzo bar and resort-inspired striped upholstery.
Tacofino Oasis represents the fifth brick-and-mortar restaurant for the brand, which opened Tacofino Hastings in 2012, Tacofino Gastown and a Victoria outpost in 2015 and Tacofino Yaletown in 2016. Beyond the five restaurants and the original Cantina location in Tofino, Tacofino also encompasses a fleet of roaming food trucks, a growing workforce of more than 250 employees and a legion of ardent fans.
