A long, cold night in Newfoundland that will leave you chilled to the bone
The Double Axe Murders
By Berni Stapleton
Directed by Tamara McCarthy
Produced by Rusticate Theatre
In 1809, two trappers disappear at Cow Head, Newfoundland. Sarah Singleton, the sister of one of the men (and fiancée of the other) sets out with a companion, John Payne, to solve the mystery. In the trappers’ abandoned cabin, they meet a mysterious stranger. Does he hold the key to the secret of the disappearance? A long, haunting night follows.
Based on true events, Berni Stapleton’s play The Double Axe Murders is a psychological thriller steeped in Newfoundland folklore.
Jessie-nominated Tamara McCarthy (upintheair’s A Brief History of Human Extinction, Greater Victoria Shakespeare’s Festival’s Julius Caesar) directs this remount from Rusticate Theatre featuring Yoshié Bancroft (the Arts Club’s The Orchard, CW’s The Flash), Ashley O’Connell (Bard on the Beach, CW’s DC’s Legends of Tomorrow) and Zac Scott (Itsazoo’s Hidden) who return to the roles that they first performed in Rusticate’s 2017 production. The chilling drama features an original set by Alex Kirkpatrick, costumes by Emily Fraser and Chantal Short, lighting by Celeste English, and sound by Curtis Tweedie in collaboration with Matthew MacDonald-Bain.
Originally commissioned by Theatre Newfoundland Labrador, The Double Axe Murders premiered in 2006.
Its 2017 Western Canadian premiere production by Rusticate Theatre has received Jessie nominations for Outstanding Performance (Yoshié Bancroft) and Outstanding Set Design (Alex Kirkpatrick).
