If I could make wine from any terroir in the Okanagan Valley, I would make it from South Kelowna. The unique combination of aspects, soils, slopes and lake effect enables us to produce what I consider the most exciting wines in Canada.

The story of our soils and their formation is dramatic; they were formed around 10,000 years ago during the last ice age, under and around glaciers which filled the entire valley to the tops of it’s hills with ice. Along with that ice came clays, silts, sands and stones from as far away as the Monashee Ranges. These glaciers ground a path over the southern shores of Okanagan Lake, resulting in the classic slopes and north-west aspects we have at CedarCreek, and dropping stones and other sediments as they did. And the Lake itself is at places almost 250 meters deep. All that water holds a relatively constant temperature, cooling the vineyards in the summer and protecting them from cold in the winter, providing a classic ‘lake effect’.

All of these factors combine to provide us with a very unique microclimate and terroir. The aspects and slopes give us pure, clean aromatics and flavours, the cooling effect of the lake preserves acidity and prevents frost, and the soil variability results in both great wine complexity but also the opportunity for small-batch wines – isolating those unique characters and bottling them for our customer. Here we have three wines exclusively grown along the South Kelowna slopes, illustrating what this terroir does best.’ And the results speak for themselves. Our Block 3 Riesling was recently awarded 93 points, and the Simes Vineyard Pinot Gris was awarded 92 points and selected as Canada’s best premium Pinot Gris by WineAlign.
