Granville Island inspires visitors with the warmth of the season

Holiday contest encourages the spirit of giving to family, friends and the needy

You feel it – that gentle tug, as if by velvet rope, that pulls people to Granville Island this time of year. They’re drawn by the Public Market – the recollection of ruby piles of pomegranates and the scents of baking croissants, the memory of vibrant seasonal plants and flowers, and the recognition that those gleaming heaps of freshly caught fish and spicy house-made sausages will make all the difference to their entertaining efforts this season. The sounds of buskers and the sights of festive lights that twinkle at night add to the special quality of shopping here.

Those searching for unique gifts know they’ll find items that are local and handmade, or notable imports, or even large and life-changing as kayaks. Wander through the Net Loft, exploring its treasure trove of locally made clothing and jewellery, cleverly crafted household items and beautiful paper goods. In the Railspur District, search out the most perfect presents as you marvel at the work of ceramic, metal, silk, wool, leather and wood artisans, potters, gold and silversmiths, plus a sake maker, a distiller, a boat builder and handcrafters of brooms.

Those stuffing stockings will find elf-worthy delights at the Kids Market. And those seeking to make the most of their day of shopping can extend their stay by taking in live theatre or dinner at one of several restaurants – they may even choose to splurge and book a room overlooking False Creek, at the Granville Island Hotel.

Granville Island Giving Contest

This year, Granville Island lovers are also eligible to win $250 to spend at Granville Island shops, matched with a $250 donation from Granville Island to the Greater Vancouver Food Bank. Simply follow the Island on Instagram at @granville_island, then share an image of what giving means to you, however you define it – whether that’s volunteering, orchestrating a memorable outing for your family, or choosing the perfect gift. Post your photo using the hashtag #GIgiving and you could receive $250, as will the food bank. The contest runs December 1 – 16, 2016. To enter, visit: granvilleislandgiving.com/contest.

Granville Island’s shops and market are open every day through December from 9 and 10am to 7pm, except on December 24th, when the Public Market and the Net Loft close at 5pm. The Island’s businesses are closed on Christmas Day. granvilleisland.com
