Holiday hosting, culinary gift-giving and artisanal delights on offer
at Chinatown grocer and noodle bar
Winter weather has arrived and that means it’s time to seek out nourishing seasonal ingredients, plan your holiday menus and browse for Yuletide gifts. Harvest Community Foods is the perfect one-stop-shop for culinary necessities like community-supported agriculture (CSA) bags filled with local winter produce; gift boxes packed with handcrafted treats; recipes to see you through holiday hosting; and artisanal delights for everyone on your list.
Year-round, the CSA boxes at Harvest Community Foods are stocked with a rotating selection of seasonal fruits and vegetables sourced from Lower Mainland farms and growers. This winter, these culinary treasure chests have been replenished with all the produce you’ll need to whip up satisfying side dishes to complement your Christmas turkey. Hearty selections like potatoes, roots and squashes are as versatile and vitamin-packed as they are tasty, while green superfoods like kale, brussels sprouts, collards and mizuna mustard greens will keep you healthy throughout cold season, and foraged chanterelle mushrooms will add that delicious earthy umami flavour to your stuffing and side dishes.
Save space under the tree for Harvest’s Holiday Gift Boxes – an easy choice for the foodie in your life (and who doesn’t love food?). The boxes cost $45 and are filled with house-made items including pickles, jams, preserves, and granola mixed from local grain farmers. Also included is a gift certificate for two for lunch at Harvest! For a more decadent pick, try the East Van Holiday Gift Boxes, which feature items from neighbourhood favourites like East Van Roasters and Hives for Humanity, along with a gift certificate for Harvest’s CSA bag program. Each box costs $80 and is packed with goodies such as locally produced chocolate, coffee and caramels, as well as beeswax candles and local honey. Proceeds help to support businesses in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, and the boxes will be available for purchase at Harvest as of mid-November.
The Harvest shelves are stocked with new artisanal products that make for perfect Secret Santa gifts. Blume Turmeric and Beetroot latte mixes will thrill health nuts, as well as Harvest’s house-made spiced pear kombucha, packed with probiotics and brimming with holiday flavour. Those who like to experiment in the kitchen will be intrigued by the possibilities of locally grown masa rice, and for anyone who loves sweet treats, locally made organic chocolates decorate the shelves for a not-so-naughty indulgence.
To send you off into holiday madness, Harvest Community Foods Owner and Chef Andrea Carlson has shared her flavourful recipe for Winter Squash with Chanterelle Mushrooms and Alpine Gold Cheese. Served as a side dish or as a vegetarian main, this recipe is guaranteed to impress your guests. You can find most of the ingredients, including carnival squash and locally foraged chanterelles, in Harvest’s CSA bags. The alpine gold cheese, sourced from Agassiz, is not included in the bags, but is currently on Harvest’s shelves. The store is open Monday to Friday from 11am to 8pm, and Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 7pm. Stop by for a visit and get ready to welcome winter!
