HARVEST COMMUNITY FOODS GETS THE FIRST TASTE OF SPRING

Produce-packed share bags star seasonal ingredients
from leading organic farms

Harvest Community Foods is celebrating spring with a fresh crop of tasty delights. The shift in seasons means Harvest’s Community-Supported Agriculture (CSA) bags are jam-packed with newly delivered produce sourced from local growers, including a healthy selection from pioneering organic farm, Klippers Organics.

Harvest’s CSA bags are replenished bi-weekly based on seasonality, and new spring arrivals have added a rainbow of colours and range of textures and flavours to spice up the kitchen. Fans of fresh produce can look forward to heart-healthy greens, swiss chard, kale, wild garlic, stinging nettles, fiddle heads and other wholesome ingredients, all packed into recyclable bags and pre-portioned to serve two. Single bags are available for purchase ($33), though foodies are encouraged to sign up for multiple-weeks or seasonal delivery to benefit from an evolving parade of goods. Sign up for Harvest’s newsletter to place your order and view recipes that incorporate ingredients from each bag.

“We’re so excited about the variety of produce we’ve packed into our spring CSA bags – they’re like treasure chests filled with good-for-you ingredients some of which might be completely new to customers,” says Gabriella Meyer, partner and chef at Harvest Community Foods. “The great thing about Harvest is that we provide not only raw ingredients, but also plenty of recipe ideas and unique artisan products to see people through the entire cooking process. Of course, dropping by the store and tasting our ramen and other meals is another great way to get inspired about what to cook at home!”

Many of Harvest’s CSA ingredients are sourced from Klippers Organics, helmed by husband-and-wife team Ken and Annamarie Klippenstein. Pioneers in the organic farming industry, the duo own a 40-acre certified organic farm in the Similkameen Valley. Like Chef Carlson, the Klippensteins are firm believers that people in all communities should have access to clean, sustainable food. Klippers actively supports the environment by conserving water and energy, teaching young farmers about conservation practices, and providing customers with healthy produce through farmers markets and local restaurants.

“We are firm believers that organic farming leads to healthier people and preserves the environment for future generations,” said Kevin Klippenstein. “Eating organic helps to support sustainable farming practices, and it’s so easy to do – especially with popular venues like Harvest Community Foods stocking produce from sustainable farmers. Subscribing to CSA bags also ensures people benefit from a steady supply of organic produce packed with flavour and nutrients.”

Recently recognized by FLARE, Harvest has quickly become one of Canada’s top ramen hot spots. Since opening in spring 2013, visitors and residents regularly line up for the signature noodle soups. The menu – which rotates often based on seasonality – is equally suited to vegans and lovers of sustainable meat; current highlights include ramen with pork shoulder, candied bacon, egg and radish; vegan udon with shiso, greens, tofu and shiitake; and vegetarian ramen with squash and miso broth, nori, scallions and sesame.

Located at 243 Union Street, Harvest Community Foods is open seven days a week, Monday to Friday from 11am to 8pm, and Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 7pm. For more information, please call 604.682.8851 or visit Harvestunion.ca.
