Internationally-renowned improvisation pioneer Katie Duck brings her provocative dance/music collaboration CAGE to Vancouver, in her first visit to the city for thirty years. A trenchant feminist analysis of the human condition and the oppression of modern life, CAGE is staged in different locations around the world, with Duck sharing the stage with local performers. For this special Vancouver edition, she is joined by musicians Ben Brown, James Meger, and Roxanne Nesbitt.
“My approach is to use CAGE as a score that I can share with artists where I travel, offering a platform to voice their artistic, cultural and personal expression, so that the material can continually develop and be played in real time for live audiences,” explains Duck. The title refers to how four key elements – the institutionalization of everything, the loss of love, the need to face the anatomic perfection of what the vagina actually is, and the use of death as a tactic for fear – have suppressed our emotions and feelings, forcing us all to live in a cage.
A dancer, choreographer and teacher, Katie Duck has inspired generations of performers through her innovative work with dance, text and sound. Born in Oxnard, California, she began performing in plays and musicals as a teenager, and attended the University of Utah as a modern dance major. She moved to Europe in 1976 and has been investigating theatre, dance and music for live performance ever since. Based in Italy, England and Amsterdam, she has toured to Asia, the US, South America, the UK, Scandinavia and Europe conducting her workshops, solo performances and devised group works. www.katieduck.com
