Trick or treat…with a twist

Last minute beer and candy pairing for your Halloween night

A good argument can be made that Halloween is an even better day when you are an adult.

Sure, as a kid you get to don a great costume and prowl the neighbourhood after dark to fill a bag with free candy. But as an adult, you can still put on a kickass costume, and you have the liberty of raiding the candy bags after the kids are in bed. Plus there are great parties to be had, with music, dancing, great food and cold drinks — and quite likely the incentive of a contest to inspire you to put some thought and effort into your disguise.

“You have to love Halloween and all the funky, freaky and frightening elements that come with it,” says Tim McLaughlin, Vice-President of Marketing at Steam Whistle Brewing. “It is a great time to get out and have some fun, just like those days when you were a kid.”

Beer is great at a Halloween party; it is also great with the treats handed out at the door. When dipping into the Halloween bag, here are some pairings to try:

  • Steam Whistle Pilsner — The crisp purity of Steam Whistle’s pilsner cuts through the sweetness of almost any candy. But the combination of a candy shell around pure milk chocolate that you find with M&M’s or Smarties is too good to not have with a cold pilsner.
  • Steam Whistle Pale Ale — Hop forward with a touch of citrus, this Pale Ale is divine with the subtle mixture of sweet and heat of cinnamon candies. Keep this pairing in mind a few months hence around Valentine’s Day when cinnamon hearts are all the rage.
  • Von Bugle Munich Lager — A Canadian favourite at Halloween are peanut butter cups, bringing together sweet with a touch of salty. The touches of toasty flavours in this German-inspired beer are a great pair with the peanut butter, and the slight hoppy flavour balances the sweetness of the chocolate.
  • Fat Tire Amber Ale — Aromas of caramel and a toasty flavour make Fat Tire a great combo with a chocolate bar that has caramel in it. Think Caramilk, Mars or Three Musketeers. Or skip the chocolate part and enjoy it with a Mackintosh toffee bar or soft caramel squares.
