Unexpecting by Zee Zee Theatre – A Review

For a change, how about going for dinner and a show tonight?  That was exactly what we did.  After grabbing a light dinner at a local bistro, we headed over to Studio 16, a performance space nestled inside La Maison de la Francophonie de Vancouver just off Granville Street for the opening night of Zee Zee Theatre’s ‎production of Unexpecting:

A comedy about modern motherhood, Unexpecting is written by playwright Bronwyn ‎Carradine and directed by Cameron MacKenzie.  The plot follows the trials and tribulations of Jo and ‎Annie, a couple who have been preparing to adopt a baby.  To celebrate her upcoming new ‎job and successful adoption application, Annie meets up with her L.A.-based best friend Pam who is the ‎head writer of a popular television series.  From that point things get messy and sometimes frantic.  ‎Amid crushing disappointment, secrets are revealed, unfulfilled ambitions are exposed, and confessions ‎are made.  An unannounced visit by Sawyer, the expectant mother, creates further chaos.  However, in the ‎end all is well.  The acting was high energy sustained by the big and brash Pam, emotionally charged Annie and an agitated Jo.  This frenetic pace is tempered by the tentative and vulnerable Sawyer, bringing a little relief to the frenzy and a focus to the heart of the story.

Unexpecting is light and fun entertainment peppered with comedic moments and roller-coaster emotions.  If you are looking for something to do that is easy and undemanding, why not make it a night out and enjoy the show!

Cast: Elizabeth Barrett as Sawyer, Jessica Heafey as Jo, Melissa Oei, as Pam and Rahat Saini as Annie.

Until May 21, 2023, UNEXPECTING is performing at Studio 16 (1551 West 7th Avenue, Vancouver, BC) from Wednesdays to Saturdays at 8:00 pm | Saturdays and Sundays at 2:00 pm. Tickets can be purchased online at zeezeetheatre.ca.
